  sequence settings

  Hi there. I’m editing some footage that I shot on my GL2, in Final Cut Pro Studio 2. I’m also bringing in some animated text via Motion and After Effects. Upon export and burning onto DVDSP, things are not looking good, my text is jagged and my picture has massive amounts of noise and an underwater look. I’m exporting out a NON self contained file and dropping it into DVDSP…..this is how I always do it, hmmmm.

  I shot in the standard 4:3. The video file info in my FCP browser states: 720X480. Did I just digitize wrong, or something? Isn’t 720X480 the resolution when I shoot in the 16:9 option on my cam? Shouldn’t I be seeing 640X480 there instead? All of a sudden I’m forgetting what that should be!

  Anyway, I’ve been playing around with my sequence settings, going from my aspect ratio of 4:3 to 3:2, then going from NTSC CCIR 601 to Square, yada yada yada, but once I turned off Field Dominance, I got rid of the jagged edge on the text, UNTIL I render, then it’s back again. All I can say it, I’m getting highly confused. I’ve never had this issue before, and have been editing for over a year now. Somewhere along the way something got screwy. Help!

  Yes, but it’s also 720×480 when you shoot 4:3. This is because DV NTSC is always 720×480, regardless of widescreen or full screen. The difference is that the 16:9 image is anamorphic or “squeezed” into the 720×480 space. That’s why the image looks tall and skinny until you tell FCP that the image is anamorphic. Then FCP will pop the picture out to fill the widescreen frame which works out to about 853×480. Make sense?

  If you’ve got a lot of graphics in your project try editing your dv footage in a DV NTSC Anamorphic timeline first, then create a DVCPRO 50 Anamorphic sequence, copy and paste everything from your DV NTSC sequence into it then do your graphics there. The DVCPRO 50 sequence won’t do anything to improve your DV footage but it’ll be better for graphics.
