  • Exporting 16:9 Self Contained FCP Quicktime

    Posted by Andy Lawless on September 26, 2008 at 4:05 pm

    Hi There;

    I’m working with FCP 6.0.4 and I’ve been trying to export a 16:9 self contained Final Cut Pro Quicktime movie from an NTSC 16:9 timeline. The self contained movie comes out as a 4:3 stretched movie with no 16:9 letterbox. Further more the image I’m getting out of my Kona LHe on my NTSC monitor is 4:3 stretched with no letterbox, where as the image in my canvas is 16:9 with letterbox. If anyone has any thoughts on how to correct this, I’d love to hear them

    Thanks;

    16:9 in NTSC is anamorphic, so you’ll need to have a monitor that can work in 16:9. If it’s a 4:3 CRT, there is ususally a 16:9 option that formats the image, or if it’s a 16:9 monitor, just set it to stretch the image to fill the screen.

    Same with the Quicktime. Open the exported video in QT and hit cmd+j and change the display size to 864×486 (for D1). If you are sending to Compressor though, just compress the 4:3 file and make sure you check the Anamorphic box in the Compressor settings. DVDSP will make let you choose the display options.

    If you really just want the video letterboxed and not 16:9, change your sequence to a 4:3 NTSC setting in FCP and add the 16:9 footage. FCP will letterbox.

    Thanks Matt;

    I was under the impression that FCP generated its own letterbox when working with Beta SP 16:9, similar to the way some Mini DV cameras generate letterbox when shooting.

    Thanks for the clarification.

    Hi Andy,

    I’m having the same problem. Utterly mystifying. When I do a test on a shorter segment within the same timeline, the resulting QT is 16:9. But when I export the entire sequence, the QT is 4:3. I’m at a complete loss.

    Hi,

    This did not work for me. I exported the 4:3 QT into compressor and check the 16:9 box and now the compressed file has a 4:3 squeezed image in the middle of the 16:9 sized frame.

    Is there another setting in compressor I’m missing? And why the heck isn’t it possible to export a 16:9 QT out of FCP anyway? It seems like crazy town.

    Thanks,
    Ondine
