Best Used or Budget Displays?
Hi all,
New user here. I’m putting together a system for a documentary feature edit and I have a very low budget with which to pick up displays: $500. These are displays for working only– we will have an external NTSC monitor for playback. I’ve checked past posts about favorite monitors, but many of them either exceed my budget or are not immediately available used. So I’m lookin’ for a little advice.
Monitors that I’m finding that are within budget are:
Used 17″ Sony SDM-HS93
Used DELL 2407WFP (I’ve seen these are a fave, but one used display will eat most of my budget– worth it?)
Used Dell Ultrasharp 2005FPW 21″ Widescreen LCD Monitor
New LG – 19″ Widescreen Flat-Panel LCD Monitor W1942T-PF
New Dell 19″ Widescreen Flat-Panel LCD Monitor SE198WFPAll of these would require a 2-display configuration due to their size (unless anyone thinks it’s worth it to do a single 26″ display). These don’t have to last forever, but obviously I’d like to get the best buy for my limited budget.

Go down to your local Costco and pick up two Samsung or two ViewSonic displays in your budget range. They range from $199 to $300+ depending on the model and size.
I have several Viewsonics (22″) and a Samsung (24″) that we use alongside our Dell 24″ displays. I believe all of them were around $230 or less each.
I would not necessarily use them for my primary working monitor, but if $500 is your total budget, then I would just go down and pick up a set of the same monitors.
If you’re not a member of Costco, Best Buy usually has the same or similar monitors or just order them online at MacMall.com

TVs and computer monitors are basically the same thing now since most big TVs are 1920×1080 resolution. I have a large desk, and it sits about 3 feet away from me, on a stand that elevates it about 8 inches. It is the greatest computer monitor setup I’ve ever used. It’s better for your eyes and better for your posture. I cannot stress this enough. Every creative professional who steps foot in our office is blown away and says “Why aren’t I doing that?” Clients love it too.
All you need is a cheap DVI to HDMI cable or adapter. And you want to turn the sharpness all the way down or else your fonts will look messed up.
I first saw this in a sound mixing studio near MTV Santa Monica where our Pro Tools guy works. They were actually using 50″ plasmas!

I recently bought a 22″ Hannspree from Bestbuy – dirt cheap. Its not bad, for the money.
