transfer 16/9 to tape
Hi,
I would like to transfer my 16/9 film to tape (using my pd170) for a possible tv broadcast.
During the recording process there are the black bands on my camera (4/3) lcd screen but when I play back this tape on my old 4/3 tv, the picture is squashed up vertically with no bands.
Is this a problem for a broadcaster? Or do they generally receive such 16/9 (4/3)”squashed” formats and click a widescreen button to adapt before broadcast?

Hi Oliver,
The problem is that the TV set of many people don’t have a 16×9 option.
If you want that everybody see your movie as Anamorphic, you need to letter-box it.
Just drop your 16×9 movie in a 4×3 sequence.

YOu have to ask the broadcaster. Many, if they take 16:9, want it letterboxed. But again, you gotta ask them. Every one will have a different answer.

I usually do the 16/9 conversion to 4/3 on the timeline, but what would a tv channel prefer to broadcast? This 4/3 conversion or a “native” 16/9 which needs stretching?

I don’t work at the TV channel so I cannot answer for them. Again, ask them.

I can tell you that international broadcast distributors only want a full height (also known as anamorphic) digi beta. (this is what you mean by squeezed.) I have never been asked to create a letterboxed version.
However as everyone has stressed, you must ask the specific broadcaster.
