SD to HD what is the best strategy?
This is a FCP workflow question.
Never had this problem before, and we’re having a hard time finding the best solution. So here we go…System info:
2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
4 GB 800 MHz DDR2
Mac HD with OSX 10.5.4
Final Cut v. 6.0.4We want our project to be finalized in 1080. The catch is that we have to use lots of stock footage from nearly a century ago, which is obviously in 1.33:1 and the stock house provides this footage only on DigiBeta or BetaSP. What is the best way to use this SD footage and get it on a HD timeline with a minimum loss of image quality? Is it even possible? Of course if there is no way to go about this then we will settle for SD 480i, but the “big boys” want HD and we thought it would be worth looking into. Thanks for your time.

You can uprez the footage in a number of ways. The Kona 3 is supposed to be very good at this, not having one I use Compressor’s advanced format conversion, but it takes a long time. Also, you must do the math on image size from 4×3 material to make it big enough to fit 1080, without distorting the footage.

The three recommended techniques are (in order of quality):
1) Upres using Teranex at a post facility.
2) Upres on te fly while digitizing using an AJA Kona 3.
3) Upres using “Advanced Format Conversion Presets” in Compressor.David Roth Weiss
