  • XDCAM HD – Recognized as HDV1080i 60????

Posted by Scott Sutter on September 8, 2008 at 3:38 pm

Was wondering if anybody has run across this bug. I have worked on a lot of stuff in the xdcam format dating back to when it was SD xdcam, anywho we had a shoot last week where 3 xdcam cameras were recording, 2 were recording to camera and 1 was recording to a xdccam hd deck. the cameras were all set to HQ setting but the deck was set to SP recording. Now when i load those SP recorded discs into xdcam transfer software it tells ms that the codec is not what i expect (xdcam hd 1080i 60 35mbs) it reports it as HDV 1080i 60? I have never seen this before and it seems quite weird. Anybod run into this issue.

    system

    FCP 6.0.4
    xdcam transfer version 2.7.1
    intel mac 2.6
    6 gb ram
    quicktime 7.5

I don’t work in those formats, but might SD be 25 mbs? If so it’s HDV I’d think, right?

no its not SD its still HD but a lower res hd compared to the HQ setting which is 35mbs…the codec thing is the real issue

what happens when you open it in quicktime and get the info?

    Does is say HDV there?

The SP mode should just be a lower bitrate than HQ.

Can you mix the clips in the timeline without a problem?

yes when i open in quicktime it does say HDV as the codec. Its really strange actually. Thats what i thought about the SP mode, i understood it as a lower bitrate. What i am actually doing is flipping the codec once i import it to xdcam hd 1080i 60 codec, just so all of the footage matches for the timeline. i jsut did a quick test with our pdw-f70 decks and recorded one clip in SP mode and one clip in HQ mode and the same thing happens when i open xdcam transfer software. I have never run into this bug but its very strange.

so you have a render issue if you put them on the same sequence?

XDCAM HD recording at 25Mbps is just HDV.
Have a look in the Sequence Presets: XDCAM HD 30 CBR> Compressor: HDV.

    Hey guys….

Before you all get into a tizzy here. XDCAM HD 25 mbit is nothing more than HDV. Its the exact same format as an HDV camcorder will record, therefore, Quicktime and FCP will recognize it as HDV instead of XDCAM HD.

Its OK, guys…. the XDCAM HD cameras record exactly the same as the HDV units in the SP (25 mbit) mode.
