How would you configure this system?
Hello everyone.
Hi I’m trying to figure out the best way to configure this Mac that I have to be the best little final cut pro editor it can be without buying anything additional for it.
It’s a PowerMac G4 with a FireWire 800. Dual 1.25 Ghz Ppc, 1.5 gig of ram.
Four Hard Drives . . . two 180 giggers on the ata 100, and on the other ata (ata 66) I have another 180 gig drive.
My question is this . . . I have a 40 gig 7200 drive just laying around. . . would I get the fastest final cut performace by installing the 40 gig drive on Ata 66, and reinstalling OS X onto that 40 gig drive riding ata 66. Then turning the two 180gig drives that ride ata 100 into a raid 0 for my scratch drive…and then using the other 180 gig drive on ata 66 for an archive drive…?

Keep the “SYSTEM/OS X” disk as it is on the ATA 100 and Raid 0 the other ata 100 drive with the ata 66 disk.
or
something completely different?

FCP has to be installed on the same drive as the OS, there is probably no way of fitting all that on a 40 GB drive.
I would never raid a ATA100 with ATA66 (even if it let me) Raid increases media bandwidth and not program speed.
Frankly if your system is getting you by I would leave it alone and start saving for an upgrade.

FCP yes, but not all the added content, that you can choose to install in a completely different drive.
I have mine set up that way, makes reinstalling FCS so much faster.
There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.

In fact you can install Mac OX with FC in an external USB 2 hard drive and let all the SATA and FW connexions for media.

ummm NO, only intel macs can boot from a USB drive. Older PowerPC machines can ONLY boot from internal drives or firewire drives.
And I wold not be booting from a firewire drive and then be wanting to capture video over the same firewire bus. To big of a risk of having dropped frames.

You are right. PPC can not boot from USB.
About using the same bus for the System drive and capturing, would depend of the bit rate of the footage. Sure you wouldn’t have any problem with 50 Mbps and even a bit higher streams.
