Problems With Rendering And Downloaded Videos
I am fairly new to FCP so bear with me please. Last week I was working on FCP on a another computer from my own. I downloaded videos from YouTube using a program and converted them to a .mov file by exporting them on QuickTime to use as video clips in FCP. I also use .aiff files for sound clips, which I converted from .mp3 with QuickTime also. And last, I downloaded some .jpg files for pictures. I used them on a computer last week and they worked fine. They all went into the timeline with no problems. Well I just loaded FCP on my own computer last night. I took some new files and got them the exact same way as I did before. Now I load my .aiff files and .jpg files and they work fine, but when I load my video clips, they show up with a red line above them and it says unrendered in the canvas. I read some previous posts about it and then started my new sequence and it asked me if I wanted to change my sequence to match the clip. I clicked yes and the video clip goes in the timeline ok, but now the .jpg files show up in the timeline as unrendered and they now have a red line when I add them to the timeline. And when I add effects to the video clips, they then show up with a red line and show up as unrendered in the canvas, even though my sequence settings should match the clip settings. I’ve tried to look up stuff about this, but nothing seems to work. They seemed to work on the other computer last week, but I don’t know what those settings were. I would like to be able to add everything and add effects without having it show up as unrendered in the canvas so I can’t view it. Otherwise, I have to render everything and that makes editing 100 times longer. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

This is a forum for professionals in the video industry, and frankly, apart from the ethical considerations your post brings to mind, of which there are many, I don’t see how downloading material from Youtube for further editing applies here. So, while we are typically happy to help all who come here for help, I doubt you will get the help you’re looking for here with this particular question.

Lots of art, from the Dadists in the 1920s through Greg Gillis today have been made through appropriation of copyrighted material.

A timeline (sequence) is set for a certain size of image and type of audio.
If you bring to that timeline media that is not of the same size and type, then it will need to be rendered. Depending on your settings and system capabilities, the system may try to automatically render in real time, or it may not be able to due to settings or capabilities.
This is an elementary question, and might more properly be discussed in the Final Cut Pro basics forum.
Others here are also reminding you that it is NOT LEGAL to use material which you are not given permission to use. This is the general area of copyright, an idea whose most basic premise is that property created by intellect (creative output) is the property of the creator, and that creator must give permission for its use. This is not only the law, but it is the moral thing to do.
Some still choose to act illegally or immorally, and this behavior may have legal and financial consequences which can be quite severe.
This is the reason professionals strongly speak against copyright violation.

If you don’t mind, I’ll field this one, even though you thankfully spared me the criticism you tossed at Walter.
First, your analogy really isn’t right on the money… It would be better if you’d said, “I need advice on how to clean a gun that belongs to someone else, and which I appropriated without permission. Will you assume that I’m about to commit a murder?” And, an appropriate answer might be, “it seems to us that someone willing to take someone else’s gun might be more liable to shoot someone than a person asking about cleaning their own gun.”
Those of us who answer questions here 24/7/365 know our audience well, and I assure you, it’s a pretty safe bet that our target audience seldom creates “legitimate art” from captured YouTube videos.
And, just as it the duty of Cow leaders to discourage any and all chat about software piracy on the Cow, it is also our duty to discourage and inform Cows about violations, or potentioal violations of other forms of intellectual property rights as well. If you ever go to the Business and Marketing Forum you would notice that Walter and I answer numerous legitimate questions there from professionals on many of these very confusing issues. It’s not like we’re trying to be Internet cops or Internet lawyers, we’re just trying to advise people in a consistent and factual way so they’ll know and appreciate the laws.
Okay, you can get back to cleaning your gun now. :} :} :}
