Can you tell the difference between SD and DVCPRO HD after downconverted?
I would like to use 2 cameras to shoot some video at 720p with an HVX and some SD with the DVX and bring it into the timeline. The final delivery will be h.264. Will there be a noticeable difference in quality from the cameras after it is encoded as h.264?

Make sure you use the same gamma setting (cinelike D) on both. White balance the cameras the same as well. You may end up having to color correct one camera to match another. Even still, with all that, it will be noticeable unless you shoot SD with the HVX.

In short, yes, I think that the color looks better when going from HD to SD than it does with a straight MiniDv camera. That’s not to say that all SD cameras look worse compared to the HVX200. Not by a long shot. I do know that I can tell a difference between stuff show on my HVX and stuff shot on a PD170.
It also makes a difference in what sequence settings you use. If you edit in a DV timeline your graphics will not look as good as they would if you started in an HD timeline.

Better shoot the same frame rate.

As long as you shoot in the same frame rate, the difference will not be noticeable. If you shoot in different frame rates, you’ll see obvious changes as you cut from camera to camera.

If you have access to an optical flow uprezzer (Shake does it, dunno about AE) uprezz the DVX to 720, edit in 720. Shoot progressive on the DVX.
That’s the maximum quality go-through.
If the h.254 is 720 high bit rate, then this will be fine.
If its YouTube quality, do anything you want…
