Question for Rafael A
Posted by Alan Lacey on August 28, 2008 at 4:33 pmHi Rafael,
You kindly advised recently about a problem I was having mixing slomoed DV footage with SD proresHQ in FCP.
You suggested that I capture the prores as lower field first to avoid interlace issues in the edit.
As I’ll be monitoring via an IoHD which has an internal hardware codec, which presumably works upper field, do you know whether it’ll be monitoring accurately or insisting on displaying upper field?
Many thanks for your continuing help.
Alan

August 29, 2008 at 3:25 amHi Alan,
The field order is only critical on tape.
In a tape the information is physically lied down in a certain order, and need to be read in the same order.
Have a look to the “AJA ioHD: 625 25 Apple ProRes” Capture Preset.
You can see that there is no mention at all of “Field Order”.
That means that if you capture DV PAL to Proress you will get “ProRes Lower First”.
If you capture PAL Digibeta to ProRes, you will get “ProRes Upper First”.
And if you digitize Analog video you can decide the field order of your digital clips.
Your ioHD expect ProRes being Upper or Lower. No problem to manage both.
You my have some “interpretation” problems when you import footage to FC. You know that FC always expect DV to be Lower and 8/10b Unc (PAL) to be Upper.
Always have a look to the FC’s Browser to make sure FC caught it.

August 29, 2008 at 10:04 amThanks Guys.
Jeremy, it’s PAL I’m capturing.
The Prores is captured via SD SDI and EBU audio from a JVC D9 vtr. So Rafael does that mean that I have to capture upper field first which is implied by your digibeta comment?
I guess I’ll have to do some experimenting here?

August 29, 2008 at 2:00 pmHi Alan,
I’m afraid I have to make few test my self too.
I think I was wrong when I suggested capture Prores PAL as Lower first.
I don’t think is possible. I believe that each codec supported for capture have a default field order that you can not change.
The think is that if you capture DV50 PAL (Lower) as ProRes, and you get an Upper first file, is because somewhere have been a Shift-fields.
The ioHD off-course can do it on the fly, but can FC do it when capturing by FW?.I don’t know. What I have clear is that the ioHD can manage ProRes whit any field order. It will manage the footage field order as checked in the FC browser, and the Sequence as in the Sequence Setting.
The ioHD won’t get messed if FC doesn’t.
Many questions my self.

August 29, 2008 at 2:39 pmAlan, you should capture the dv footage as ProRes though any capture card and the field order should be taken care of.

August 29, 2008 at 5:31 pmSo Jeremy are you saying that I can/should capture the DVcam as upper field first proresHQ?
I can see that working in FCP if FCP/IoHD allows me to do it. Actually thinking about it I guess I can capture this analogue, but that seems a retrograde step.
I’m off for a couple of weeks now so won’t be able to experiment, but I’m very grateful to you both for your comments and support.
It’s gratifying that two of the forums most respected names have not poo-poohed my frustration.
Kindest regards to you both.

August 29, 2008 at 6:50 pmI would set you easy setup to capture PAL ProRes via the ioHD and everything will be fine.

This seems like a good approach to me. When you slo-mo the DVCAM-originated footage for your backgrounds will you not apply frame-blending anyway, which will eliminate the effects of interlacing altogether?

August 31, 2008 at 2:49 pmI think was a delirium of my self to think that would be possible to decide the field order on capturing.
ProRes PAL will be captured as Upper first whatever the field order of the on-tape footage.
Rafael
PS: But would be great to have the possibility to choose.
