Importing P2 to Final Cut Pro
I am having problems importing P2 footage into Final Cut Pro.
I have a iMac G5, FCP 5.1.1. I have imported successfully in the past. Recently I shot on a Panasonic HVX200 1- 32 gb and 2-16GB cards. I loaded them through my Mac Powerbook G4 directly onto a hard drive. I created folders with contents and last clip for each card. Then plugged via firewire the hard drive into my iMac G5. I opened FCP, File>Import>Panasonic P2, then selected one of the folders and imported one card successfully. Then later in the day I could not get the other two cards to import (going thru same steps as above). I tried to import the original card again and that wouldn’t import nor would other P2 folders that I have successfully imported before.I see the thumbnail , file name, media start and media end times. Getting information on the P2 folders tells me it has correct number of gigs I shot on that card. When I select one or more files and click import or click import all, a dialog box comes up saying “One or more P2 files failed to import, probably incomplete or corrupt clips.”

Shane’s Stock Answer #36 – “One or more clips failed to import…”
Very often in the field with this camera the camera operator will delete clips from the P2 card that they just don’t like. That is the beauty of this camera. But, the still for that video file (located in the CLIP folder in the CONTENTS folder)…the still that you see when you are in the P2 Import window…is not deleted. So you will see the image, and the name, but the video file would have been deleted.
What you can do it compare the file names in the VIDEO folder and CLIP folder and see if anything is missing. If something is, then you know what the problem is. You can then just import the rest a few at time, skipping that one.
ALSO…in the P2 Import window…in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.
ALSO…make sure your file names aren’t too long. Try shortening them and see if that works.

I don’t think so. File names are 0001A9, 00072Y, for example.
My P2 import window is slightly different than your example. I don’t have a preferences button. But I do have a box that says remove duplicate/adv. pull down frames. And this is unchecked.
When I have the P2 import window open and I click on the folder I created with the contents and the last clip in it, the contents folder is active and the last clip is not active (I am guessing because it is a file not a folder). This is probably OK but I am just trying to figure out what is not working .

I solved the problem but not in any conventional way. I used P2CMS. The software “ingested” the folder with the P2 files and then exported them to the desktop of the iMAC. Then opened FCP on the desktop of the iMAC (not the Hard Drive as before). I could then import via Panasonic P2 into FCP the files I had exported via P2CMS. Then I transfered the Quicktime files of the P2 footage onto my hard drive. I copied both the original P2 folders and the exported folders from P2CMS as well to the hard drive. I tried going direct to FCP without going thru P2CMS all from the iMAC and it still said corrupt or incomplete files.
But wow did this take a long time. Especially since I didn’t have enough room on the iMAC hard drive. So I had to go through the whole process and then copy all to hard drive and then trash desktop files which meant unlocking files and repeat three times.
But I still can’t go direct from P2 folder to FCP???

Hmmm…that would suggest that the original file structure of the P2 card was messed up, or you named the dump folders with symbols like Card #01…or Card-01. FCP doesn’t like symbols, or an incomplete file structure.

I had labeled them with 8-19-08 and #2. I renamed the folders with only words just now. Still the same problem importing P2. But earlier I had imported folders successfully even one with the 8-19-08 (but no #).
So I transferred one of the re-named folders to the desktop and opened FCP on the desktop. That let me import P2. So it must be something with the hards drives LaCie 1TB via 400 firewire purchased in last year. But I have been importing P2 on the hard drives successfully until this week??
