  P2 import problems

  This is only the second time I’ve posted. My first post (from earlier today) seems to have got lost. Sorry if I’m being impatient and two similar posts turn up from me. If that happens, I’ll know better next time.

  I shot material using HPX500. Copied it via G4 laptop from the cards into a folder on a firewire drive and transferred the files using log and transfer into FCP. From one card all the files except one transferred. It won’t even show up in the Log and Transfer list. It’s there in the folder along with all the other MXF video files, but it refuses to show up in the log and transfer window. It also shows up as the ‘last clip’ on the LASTCLIP.TXT file – don’t know if that has anything to do with it. All the other clips that show up as ‘last clip’ seem to import OK so I doubt it’s that. Does anybody have any idea how I can get this clip into my project?

  Second point. When I use my MacBook Pro to do a log and transfer from P2 MXF files stored on a firewire drive, nothing shows up. No clips appear in the clip window. I can carry out the log and transfer on my G4 Powerbook and also on my G5 desktop machine from the same drive. Is there a download/plug in that I’m missing to make the system work on an MacBook Pro?

  Log and Transfer or ‘Import Panasonic P2’? Which version of FCP are you using? Are your ‘missing’ clips spanned to another card?
  You may also want to try transfering the files to Mac drive and then import them too. I’ve had issues with Fat32 drives and big clips.
  You may be able to grab the xmf files from After Effects if you have it as a workaround too.

  First answer, Log and Transfer – I’m using FCP 6.0.3. I don’t know if the clip is spanned to another card because I can’t get it into the Log and Transfer window to find out. It’s annoying that you can see the time/date created on the icon in the folder, but neither the out time or the duration of the clip which would allow me to work it out (I was using time of day time code for this shoot). The clip size is 3.75 Gb, not the biggest clip on the card, and there’s nothing to suggest there should be a problem.

  Not sure what you mean about transferring the clips to Mac drive unless you mean to my hard drive which a don’t normally do. I copied the clips from the G4 Powerbook directly onto a 100Gb portable using firewire 400 (on location) and then onto a 1Tb firewire 800 drive back in the office before attempting to Log and Transfer them.

  Does After Effects import XMF directly?
