Trimming
Posted by Charles Taylor on August 5, 2008 at 10:44 pm90% of my editing operations are:
Place playhead on the frame I want the shot to start/end on.
Hit RR, and trim forward/back using the mouse. There should be one button that does that… A ripple next edit back to playhead, (and its complement, ripple previous edit forward to playhead).
If I go into the trim window, I lose my place (it centers on the edit).
This is bugging the crap out of me, any advice would be welcome.

August 5, 2008 at 11:11 pmDon’t know if it’s exactly what you want, but have you tried using the “Extend Edit” command?

August 5, 2008 at 11:15 pmYeah, I know about that one. Doesn’t do it for me, as I must first select the relevant edit. Seems kind of dumb, as there are only two possible edits I could be referring to.
Also, it does a roll edit, not a ripple edit. Why would I want to change the next clip, too?
Grrr…
Any Avid users out there who can comment on this? I’ve heard Avid has better trimming, and, honestly, this is enough for me to switch.

August 6, 2008 at 1:38 amIn the Trim Edit Window you can toggle the U key to get yourself trimming on the out point or the in point. With Dynamic Trimming enabled, you can JKL to your new in or out point, and then you’re off to the races. Down Arrow key keeps you in Trim Edit and repeat the process.

August 7, 2008 at 7:36 amIt’s not one button but another option to trim off the head or tail of a shot (without touching the mouse) is
– Put playhead on frame you want to cut out (or first frame you want to keep if trimming the head)
– Press Ctrl-V to add edit
– (If trimming head) Press left arrow to move playhead earlier by 1 frame
– Press X to mark clip
– Press forward delete button to delete the clip and close up the gapThat’s pretty quick and if you do this all the time, then it could be made into one button by adding a macro program like Keyboard Maestro or iKey.

August 7, 2008 at 5:15 pmThanks – I think I can bind that to a keystroke with Quicksilver (which I use all the time) – so that’s great. Thanks for the tip.
