This looks pretty interesting. I think you have to register to see the specs page, but they are accepting a boatload of codecs.

I just did my first DGS upload last week of a :30 TV spot.
Worked out pretty well and saved a beta tape and a fedex charge to boot.
Every station should be doing this for tv spots right now.

Out of curiosity what file format did you use? Cox has a 300 mb file size limitation, but it looks like they take many codecs, which did you use?

the specs were:
mpeg2 video at 4:3 / 720×480 / 29.97fps / 18 mbps & 9 frame GOP.
(my encoder maxes out at 15mbps but it looked great and passed QC)
mpeg1 layer 2 audio at 384kbps
Cox should only be accepting mpeg2 since the quality will
go down if they transcode to mpeg2. Though I’ve seen so
many crappy looking local spots people probably just don’t care. -

What encoder are you using and I’m assuming that’s a muxed mpeg file?

compressor works.
if you duplicate an mpeg2 dvd preset then change
it to a “program stream” it will have the mpeg 1 layer2
audio added. even though you can’t configure the audio
it sets it to whatever your sample rate is at 384kbps. -

Since I asked you, I went into Episode Pro and found a program stream that seems to work great, looks as sharp as the 8bit uncompressed file, only 26 megs!

The only thing that sucks about the cox upload is it’s web based. I’ve dealt with other companies that offer uploads and they’ve all been ftp based which is so much nicer/easier to manage.

Do not, repeat DO NOT bother using Cox’s upload service, unless you want your customers to hate you.
Cox has not shaken this thing out, and their support is non-existent. And as near as I can tell, they couldn’t tell mpeg from a hole in the ground.
Stick to tape or DG.
