Outputting an AVI that can be read by a PC
I need a cost effective way to output an AVI that can read by a PC (not in Quicktime on a PC). Here’s the scenario: We broadcast a weekly long form on the local ABC affiliate. They use Grass Valley M-Series servers on a Florical system for playback. However, they are missing a hardware component, so for now they are requesting they we deliver our program to them on a portable HDD in an AVI that the M-Series can read (DV compression). Every time I’ve tried exporting an AVI — whether through FCP (ver 6.0.4) or Compressor, they can’t read it (but it can be played in Quicktime player).
Any thoughts?

Are you saying that DV .avi is not readable on their system? In general I’ve been able to create DV .avi that works on Windows.
You could try MPEGStreamclip. It’s freeware.

Yes — and I’ve tried MPEG Streamclip . . . same result. Are there any particular settings that I might be missing?

You’d probably have to tell us exactly what settings you’re using. DV .AVI, audio PCM 48kHz.

Try exporting an AVI from MPEG Streamclip and apply the PhotoJPEG compresor. This AVI should be generic enough that they can read it (as long as they can read it in Quicktime). I used this workflow until we got the DVCPro50 and DVCProHD codecs on our PC.
I’m sure with some experimenting (try a 1 minute clip) and different encoders you will get an AVI to go through.

That’s it! – I was using the DV/DVCPro compressor perviously — the Photo JPEG worked like a charm.
