Formatting for cell phone downloads.
Recently,while exploring some of the compression formats for FCS, I came across a few compression options pertaining to cell phones and other mobile devices. While I knew the format was there from the previous iteration of FCS, the thought occurred to me; I have video that would be perfect for such an endeavor. After browsing tens of podcasts, training dvds, FCS reference books, and other FCS users, there appears to be a dearth of information on this topic. Presuming one knows how to point and click, formatting for this arena seems to be pretty straight forward; adjust your settings in Compressor and go however, the most pertinent question remains. How do you get these vids, pics, and or music onto mobile devices? In other words what do I need to take that ringtone or video and have a client download it from my website and watch the cash register turn? I apologize in advance if this post is a bit misleading “Formatting for cell phone download s” however, I’m at a loss in this area please help. Thanks in advance.

Well that all depends on the type of phone. There is NO universal format. With the iPhone for example video is ether synced on from the computer, or watched via the youTube app or on a web site. In the Palm treo I had before the iPhone there was a proprietary application that would convert a video file then sync it onto the phone, there was no option to get it via the web.
Honestly I don’t know that the cash register will turn much for cell phone video, the size of the screens means that you wont be watching a lot of long videos on it, and people will RARLY pay for any short video.
Sorry to rain on your parade but with the different types of phones and the lack of people willing to buy video content specifically for a phone I don’t see how your going to be making much. And if the video is in demand you are going to have to tell a lot of people that there phone is not compatible at this time, and then you will spend even more time researching the video that that particular phone will accept and how video can be put on that particular phone.
There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.

Zane, thanks for replying to my post. I don’t have dreams of making millions from cell phone downloads, although it would be nice, I would just like to know how to make it an additional stream of revenue. I’ve seen cheaply produced late night commercials all the time where I’m asked to “Text 555___ to this number” and get this video clip of some girl dancing or some special ringtone. In fact, I recognize the FCP/ Motion templates used. So someone is definitely getting that business just not us. I understand different phones have different requirements 3G, CDMA, TDMA, etc. The options to do this are in FCP, I am just missing the part of this puzzle going from FCP and to a client’s cell phone via the web using FTP or whatever method is used to accomplish this.
