Hi there, i’ve to digitise more than a 100 tapes to 10 bit uncompressed QT using FCP 6.0.4 (for archiving purposes) but at the same time i have to make QT DV PAL of the same footage for an offline (using avid xpress) I have done a test an is working OK up yo this point. Now the offline people gave me an EDL of the edit (as a test) for online in FCP. So I imported the EDL to FCP and is fine, but when I reconnect the media, (EDL from Avid to QT 10 uncompressed) everything is off ( QT star now from 00:00:00:00, lose original TC) is any way to reconnect media without losing TC. is any other way to do it rather than manually changing the time for each shot? or I have to redigitised the footage again using the EDL?
can any one help me with this thanks.

How did you make the DV versions?

in FCP using exporting and making a QT option

Well if you are placing clips on a timeline and exporting them, the exported clips take on the TC of the sequence and no longer the clips. (this would be fine if you make the seq. TC match the clips but that takes effort and you can normally only use one clip on each seq.)

If you have to jet capture the 10b stuff and export as DV, the best way I see is the one pointed by Michael.
Setting the starting TC of each sequence to match the one of the footage.
If you would have the footage already captured and converted, there is another easy and fast way.
That is extracting the TC tracks from the 10b clips and adding them to the DV clips. That takes a couple of seconds to do.

If you capture footage in FCP, and want to make low res versions of those, you need to use the MEDIA MANAGER and the RECOMPRESS option. This will keep the same name, reel and timecode information.

I have a written tutorial on how to do this in the FCPUG SUPERMAG 2008, found here:

Hi guys, sorry if i ve been a little bit confused, the problem is not making the low res file the problem is when I try to reconnect uncompressed files to EDL, here is the problem again.

Want to digitise original video to Uncompressed Quicktime.

From this we make an DV file for offline.

    From offline make edl.

We want then to online and relink to the uncompressed file.

FCP doesn’t seem to do this properly. The source timecode it takes seems to be random for each file. (the offset of each shot remains the same for each source file but each file is random)

Example of test I did (the bold and italic text is how the shots were relinked the normal text is the edl)

    TITLE: TEST SEQUENCE 2

    REEL 208 Delay 00:01
    001 208 AA/V C 00:00:12:11 00:00:17:24 00:00:00:00 00:00:05:13
    00:00:12:10 00:00:17:23

    002 208 AA/V C 00:00:00:01 00:00:10:01 00:00:05:13 00:00:15:13
    00:00:00:00 00:00:10:00

    REEL 209 Delay 22:05
    003 209 AA/V C 00:00:22:05 00:00:30:00 00:00:15:13 00:00:23:08
    00:00:00:00 00:00:07:20

    REEL 211 Delay 07:03
    004 211 AA/V C 00:00:22:10 00:00:28:17 00:00:23:08 00:00:29:15
    00:00:19:03 00:00:25:10

    005 211 AA/V C 00:00:03:07 00:00:11:03 00:00:29:15 00:00:37:11
    00:00:00:00 00:00:07:21

Are we missing something in how to do this????????
    thanks

HOW you make your offline files have EVERYTHING to do with how this works. If you export QT files using Quicktime conversion or even Quicktime Movie, the original timecode will NOT transfer…it will start at 00;00;00;00. If you recompress the footage using Media Manager, then the original timecode will be retained.

Then you edit with those offline files…and when you are done you can reconnect to the full res captures (make a few adjustments to the sequence settings…that I mention in my article).

Unless you do things properly, things won’t work properly.

    Hi Shane,
Your Articule is really good, I did everything you said and does work, but the problem start when I try to make an EDL of the offline, (remember that the offline will be done in avid xpress and online in FCP, so the only reference between the two system will be EDL, I can not copy the avid project into FCP.)
When I try to make an EDL of the offline it come up a message that said:
“The Media Files of one or more clips are missing Timecode tracks and may also be missing reel names, proceeding with export will result in an EDL that will not represent the original sequence correctly”.
I undestand if you do what you suggestin your articule within FCP it work perfectly.
    Thank for your help.

Didn’t know if this would work in trying to capture in FCP for an Avid offline. When Avid imports the footage, it might not reference the quicktime timecode. It sounds like it isn’t. Avid doesn’t use quicktime media files…it imports them into it’s own proprietary codec, either OMFI or MXF, depending on the version you are using.

If you want to offline on an Avid, and online on FCP, you need to capture the footage with the Avid. That is the only way.

    Sorry.
