    Hey guys,

    Quick question,

I am on set making video dubs of footage we are shooting. Were in a studio, things are nice and controled, its just cheaper to get dvds to the transcription place if we make them here, and its cheaper.

I have 2 sony set top dvd recorders.

    I have a sony dsr20, and a Sony HVR-M15U

I have searched the internet, and i just want to make sure that this is impossible, or for a way to do this.

how do i get the footage to record widescreen, as we are shooting 16×9. also, how do i get a black bar around the timecode….(if it goes 16×9 will the timecode then be in the black area?????

the dvd recorders we have are sony rdrgx360’s

thanks, i know this is slightly off topic, but I am a final cut pro editor, and this is where this project will end up!!

    thanks

First what is the format your shooting ? I mean 16×9 doesnt mean HD. You can shoot 16×9 in mini DV so it will be cool if you could write a bit about the specs.

If your shooting HD, you’ll have to take a downconvert output to record on a SD DVD Device. And on the device you output from you probably be able to set a format to output on your dvd device Like Letterbox. Than if you want to have the Burn-in in the ”black area” you’ll have to output in letterbox downconvert from the device.

If you put a time code burn-in on a native 16×9 the time code will be on the image. I mean even when you will convert it with letterbox. You have to rezize the image in letterbox before puting your Burn-in on it.

is there such a thing as a device, that will read the timecode from the firewire port on teh deck, and will put the timecodeon the screen?

we are not shooting HD, we are minidv 24p.

You should be able to run a BNC out of the DVCAM decks “super out” and into the composite line in on the set top DVD players and that would provide you the timecode burn in straight to DVD. Depending on the menu setup on the DVD burners you might have to make sure you set them to encode for 16:9 unless you’re playing it back on a set that can switch between 4:3 and 16:9. The time code will not be in the black area, it will be slightly obstructing the video. Some decks you can adjust exactly where it will b in the frame.

What’s wrong with just turning on the Display on the decks and using that? That’s what we do for all our clients who request TC Window burns from DV, HDV and DVCAM.

As for 16:9, we just output Letterbox to the DVD recorder.

And ask your transcriptionist to switch over to Quicktime files and you’ll get them even faster. Our transcriptionist can pull the TC right off the QT files with a standard foot pedal so we just upload them and she turns them around incredibly fast.

ywah, i wish it was that simple,

the “transcription” house requires a black rectangle around the timecode, and only certain decks do that, so we are renting from a big rental house, instead of using my decks and making me rentals

    booooooooo

I can honestly say I’ve never heard of that. Charge them for the deck rental too!

Time to get a new transcriptionist.

i would love to, but this is what happens when you work for public television!!!! No one makes decisions, or pisses anyone off…which usually leads to bad decisions and wastes of money
