[Steve West] “I’d like to transcode everything to anamorphic DV for editing then relink it to the full res files. I cut a little bit with the HD files, then converted some footage via media manager to DV, but I can’t get those files to link to that sequence. They are still linked to the HD files. Does FCP work this way? “
FCP is not a great offline / online editor. The only way I can suggest to do what you’re proposing is to capture all your HD material to one drive, transcode everything to DV onto a 2nd drive ensuring the all of the file names are EXACTLY the same as the HD files. Now edit in DV, then remove the DV drive and re-connect the HD drive. As long as all of the file names are EXACTLY the same, FCP will re-link to the HD files instead.
OR, an even better way to work, is simply to take all your DV footage offline and simply recapture all the media in the HD format of your choice once you’re done with the edit. You can Media Manage your final timeline into a new project and recapture. This would be a heckuva lot faster than capturing in HD, transcoding to DV, switching back to HD.
Now what file format are you going to use in HD? You’ve got HDV from the Z1 and DVCPro HD from the 200. In this case, we use the AJA Kona 3 to convert everything from HDV to DVCPro HD during ingest and edit in that format.
With FCP, you’re best off editing full online and if you’re only talking about HDV or DVCPro HD there absolutely no reason to “offline” in DV mode. The frame rates are so small with both of those HD formats, you’re best off just “onlining” from the get go.
Offline to Online Avid is still much MUCH better at that workflow than FCP. Media 100 is far superior in that as well. With FCP, you’ll have to adjust your mindset to this limitation.
