using Diskwarrior to rebuild directory. problems restarting Mac from Disk
Posted by Rich Krysz on July 1, 2008 at 3:21 amI am posting this here becasue i know there are those here who are use this software. I want to rebuild my directory. it’s very fragmented and i have been having some performance issues. I jsut got the Disk warrior program today. I am using leopard 10.5.4.
So i go to restart the computer and hold down the C key until the gray apple logo appears–like the instructions say. however, it goes on to start up the computer from the regular internal drive. it’s not working. what gives? the diskwarrior i am using is 4.1

July 1, 2008 at 3:33 amYou are doing it exactly right. Perhaps you got a bad disk? Did you buy locally or did you order form Alsop?
BTW, I also have 4.1, though the disk says CD Rev 42. What does your disk say?

July 1, 2008 at 4:03 amI semed to have figured it out…here’s my problem…which i found on the Alsoft webpage:
“NOTE: The current DiskWarrior CD cannot start up the new Mac Pro and Xserve models introduced on 01/08/2008, the MacBook Air introduced on 01/15/2008, the MacBook/MacBook Pro models introduced on 02/26/2008, or the iMac models introduced on 04/28/2008. An updated disc that will also start up these recent Mac models will be released as soon as Apple, Inc. releases new startup files to Alsoft, Inc. and other developers. Click here to learn how to repair the directory of a disk in a Mac model that cannot be started from the DiskWarrior CD.”
I have one of the new Imacs released on 4/28/2008. I hope Apple moves faster.

July 1, 2008 at 4:04 amRich,
Go to the Alsop website and see if they have a notice or anything that can help, and by all means call Alsop first thing tomorrow. Every time I’ve called them their first reaction has been less than helpful, then they always break down and deliver. I suspect they are trained like insurance adjusters, to weed out the timid, so let ’em know you’re very unhappy and persist.
Good luck,

July 1, 2008 at 3:10 pmIf you have another older computer, you may be able to attach a firewire cable between them, start your new computer in firewire Target disc mode (hold T while booting), and then use Disc Warrior from the old computer.

There are many tools you can use to clean up your system besides DW. DW rebuilds directories that are damaged, not fragmented. A “fragmented” directory is not necessarily something you can easily determine on your own. And it might not even be a problem. I don’t even know what a fragmented directory is. Disk Warrior has very specific uses, be very careful with it.
I’d use MacJanitor to clean up caches and lots of other junk on yor system drive and I’d use Disk Utility from your system installer to do major repair on your system files including permissions. If you need more power and control, Drive Genius is a good tool BUT you must make a secure backup of yoir system before using these tools; they are not benign. They can be destructive.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

Right…I use DiskWarrior. DiskWarrior definitely doesn’t market itself in a way you just defined it. It’s apparently also to optimize the directory by rearranging the “out of order” items.
“Optimized directories have zero items out of order”–> i assumed they are talking about fragmentation.
well i had 30% out of order. So I rebuilt it using Diskwarrior. In the process, it discovered some damage.
