FCS2 RAID
Posted by Gary Gowman on June 25, 2008 at 11:38 pmWe have a MediaVault 5108 we use for online HD work with FCS2 and we now cannot add new folders or delete old ones from the root level of this RAID. Only subfolders. I have tried changing Get INfo permissions to read and write and it always reverts back saying we don’t have privileges. I also ran Disk Utility to repair permissions and disk repair. Still no luck.
Anyone know how to fix this and what caused it to happen?

June 26, 2008 at 12:59 amHave you tried checking the “disable permissions for this volume” box? That’s what I did for my XRAID when I first started getting permissions errors since I didn’t want to constantly waste my time fixing permissions.

June 26, 2008 at 1:16 amSorry, it’s actually “ignore ownership on this volume”, located at the very bottom when you do a get info on the drive.

June 26, 2008 at 1:32 amtried that with no luck. I am googling a lot and a lot of people have had this problem. I tried all their suggestions and still no luck. 🙁 at least the RAID works and we can work on current projects. what a PITA tho. I have no down time to install Leopard/FCS2 clean and rebuild the RAID.

June 26, 2008 at 1:42 amI’d recommend getting a copy of Disk Warrior, I think it’s pretty cheap. It’s regarded as the only solid tool for recovering problematic disks in OS X when Disk Utility fails to help. Whatever you do, don’t use another 3rd party app like Norton Disk Utility – that will defrag your disk in a way that totally screws up the built in defragging and indexing that is done within OS X behind the scenes.
You might also consider enabling journaling, but I don’t know if you can turn off journaling once it’s on w/o reformatting. Journaling in Apple’s older manuals say should be off for media drives for higher access rates, but I think there’s newer thought that it should always be turned on, can’t really remember the final verdict. There’s a long thread about it in this forum.

June 26, 2008 at 1:48 amHi Brad,
I also ran Disk Warrior earlier and it did not help. 🙁 I appreciate your help, too. Someone set this up before I came to work here and they have Journalling and it should be off. I think I may have to bite the bullet, back up 3.5 TB and reformat as well as upgrade to Leopard while I am at it.Gary Gowman-Video Director

June 26, 2008 at 2:09 amFirst of all, there’s a Ciprico forum here on the cow.
https://forums.creativecow.net/forum/ciprico
The recommend NOT using Disk Warrior and they DO recommend journaling.
Might want to search that forum or give them a call. When I used thier products in the past, they had a very knowledgeable crew.

June 26, 2008 at 4:11 amI tried their COW forum and it has no activity. Doesn’t help me now to maybe get answer next week. No replies. Can’t do anything about journalling at this point of time. Called the companies and they never answer or call back. It’s been noted by others that the support is next to non existent. I believe it’s a Mac OSx thing with permissions. Always says I ca read only no matter what changes I make as administrator. I just updated to Leopard and still the same problem. argh

Wow. I now feel your pain. That is not a good situation.
I remember this problem happening before, not sure if it was a Ciprico Raid. I’ll see what I can dig up for you.
