  Photos in an HDV Sequence, Converting to SD?

  I’m working on a project shot in 1440X1080 HDV and I have to incorporate digital photos, which are unfortunately too small to use effectively in an HD sequence.

  My idea is that since our final product will be on an SD DVD, I was thinking I could drop the whole project down to SD to give myself more leeway in working with the photos.

  My questions are:
  1. Is this the best way to go or is there a better way to get the most out of these photos?
  2. What is the best way to down-convert and get the best image quality? Should I use a 16:9 SD sequence, or have it letterboxed in a 4:3 sequence? Do I need to convert the files themselves to SD or can I just drop the HDV files into a SD sequence?

  1. If the images are smaller than the HD frame that’s probably the best way to go.

  2. Whether you use anamorphic or letterbox is up to you. There is no better. It’s what you want to achieve and how you want your video to look.

  You can put the HDV sequence into an SD sequence, which is simple enough. Whether this is the best method depends on how you need to incorporate your stills into the project. It’s not something we can tell you without knowing the project.
