  pro res hd on an imac

  I’m new to the Pro res, but have done plenty of hd on souped up systems at work. Now i want to try to do a project at home on a new imac. Here’s what i want to try to do…
  i have an iMac, 4gig of ram, 2.4 ghz dual core. i want to help some people edit their hd project without them paying too much. i would digitize the footage on a real hd system, pro res onto a firewire 800 drive. does anyone forsee a problem with me editing that hd pro res material on my imac through the firewire drive? how about multicamming it? and then after the edit, i’d go back to the real system and output to hd. and finally, the quality is really that good huh?

  ProRes will cut fine on a iMac. Not sure about multicam off a FW800 though.

  ProRes is ok, but we stay in DVCPro HD for all our compressed HD editing.

  FW800 can pull a single stream of HD ProRes, multicam is going to be tough, you will be fighting dropped frames a lot. If you use DVCProHD as a codec you maybe able to pull 2 or 3 streams.

  I much prefer DVCPro HD. We’ve been using that workflow almost four years now for network HD programming and independent films / documentaries and it has worked extremely well.

  There are issues with ProRes 1080i HQ and Color that really showed itself in a recent project that was sent to me for color grading. The codec fell apart pretty quickly and there were all sorts of rendering issues that are still being addressed by Apple.

  ProRes will probably be a good codec once it matures, but right now, we’re sticking with the tried and true. We’ve delivered 80+ HD network masters with DVCPro HD and we have very happy clients.
