Getting a strange issue when editing with Prores
This is very strange but I can’t seem to figure out how to correct it…I am editing HDV footage from a canon XH A1 and setting it up in pro res. Everything captures and plays great. I edit everything down and add titles with the title generator. It looks great everything is lined up and plays fine. THen when I go to export using compressor into H.264 format for the web at %25, all the titles get stretched and cut off at the bottom of the screen. THe video looks fine and all proportions are correct, but the text is getting all stretched and funky. Anyone know how to fix this?

I’m not sure what’s happening, but I’ve had similar experiences. I think it has something to do with changing codecs and pixel ratios, and the text tool isn’t as sophisticated to display correctly. I would see it when I went from DVCProHD to SD. Like you all my video looked correct (center punched), but text was all over the place.
I assume you are using the FCP’s text title tool, that is where I had this issue.
My work around was to do a quicktime export of just the sections that had text,
and bring them back into the timeline. This kept them where I designed them.
A better option would be to use Motion (or even LiveType) for all your text.I no longer have to deliver both HD & SD, so I haven’t had this issue in a long time.
I’ve also update OS and FCP/QT several times since then.What system are you on?

I am on 10.4.11 and FCP 6.0.3. Ya this is very strange. There has got to be an easier work around then exporting all titles and re importing.

Are you exporting with Compressor right from the timeline? If so, export a self contained QT first, using Quicktime Movie — current settings, then use that in Compressor to encode to h.264.

Yes I am exporting directly to compressor. Won’t it take a long time to render a self contained QT and then longer again to render it down to H.264? Would a QT reference work the same?
I am wondering if there is an adjustment I can make to the text itself to export properly. And it’s strange because when I un-check correct for aspect ratio in the clip viewer, it changes it to what it looks like in the final render… ie stretched and cut off.

I would try a Reference QT and see if that works. Always go out to QT whether Reference (usually will work fine) or self-contained to compressor. I have had the same issues you described when going straight from the timeline.
I have also had it where the compression will fail for no apparent reason when going from the timeline, then I made a Ref QT and it worked fine. Go figure.
