    I posted this in the HDV forum as well, but would also like some tips from a FCp editors Point of view as well. Since this is where I will be editing it.

    I will be down at the red bull air races in Detroit this weekend and I really want to get some great footage. I would like to get some shots and put them into super slow motion. I’ve never really understood the over cranking and under cranking techniques that are used. Could somebody explain this and let me know how to go about shooting something that is moving very fast to get the best slow motion possible?

    I will be filming with a SONY FX 1 – 1081i

    I also have the choice to film with a Panasonic DVX 100 a

    What would you prefer for shooting something like this?

    Try using “optical flow” in motion. It takes forever to apply/render the effect, but I have gotten very impressive results with slow motion HDV footage that way.

    Overcranking means you are shooting more frames per second than your playback system usually needs. Sony’s Super Slo-Mo system for sports events shoots 90 frames per second.

    To get the finest slow motion , you must provide your software with as many discrete slices of time as possible. How many frames or fields per second can you shoot with that rig and how fast can you set the shutter?

    Experimentation with optical flow BEFORE you travel is going to pay big time. Does it work better with some motion blur (shutter speed at 60th to 250th) or with the crispest images exposed at the fastest shutter speed (above 2000th second)?

    Do you have the f-stop to shoot at 4000 second if the sun goes behind a cloud?
    How’s your ability to move the camera and keep a low-flying, really fast airplane in the frame?

    If you decide to use the ag-dvx100a use it progressive and 30fps.
    Then in post use TWIXTOR (plug-in, the best for slow motion).
