Will keylight work with AE 8.0?
Posted by Jason Burris on April 27, 2007 at 3:00 amI have the keylight plug-in and I am debating whether to purchase AE 7.0 production version now or wait until AE 8.0 comes out with the CS2 bundle in June. Does anyone know if keylight will work with AE8.0? I hate the idea of buying 8.0 if keylight will not work with it, but I don’t want to get 7.0 if the next version is much better.

April 27, 2007 at 3:07 amKeylight comes with After Effects 7, and I’m pretty sure it’s in 8 as well. Might be wrong.
However, Keylight changed (very) slightly from AE 6.5 to 7, and I assume there will be some minor changes, even if they are only under the hood, between 7 and 8.

April 27, 2007 at 3:45 amAharon,
I didn’t know keylight came with 7.0, I thought it was a special plug in that you had to get separately, at least that is what my AE instructor informed us.Do you think it is worth waiting to get the next version of AE? I really need it now for a class I am taking, but I have been putting it off because the next version is out soon. Is there a significant difference between the two versions?

A quick look at the Adobe Support pages reveals that Keylight is an optional install with Adobe After Effects 7 Professional (not Standard). This is similar to the CC/CycoreFX package that is included on the AE7 install discs. When you purchase After Effects 7 Professional you get a license for Keylight, the CC effects and Color Finesse. These plug-ins can be installed from the AE7 install disc’s 3rd Party Plug-ins folder/option.
It’s worth noting that the full version (non-upgrade) of AE CS3 runs you $999, which is the same price as the full version of AE 7 Pro. To upgrade from AE 5.x, 6.x or 7.x Professional or Standard is $299. If you have a previous version of AE (5 or higher) then this might be the route to take. If you don’t have an older version I would wait for CS3.

April 27, 2007 at 5:21 amKeylight will come bundled with AE CS3, just like Cycore FX and Color Finesse.
It’s not included in the Public Preview (also like Cycore FX and Color Finesse) for obvious licensing reasons.Adolfo Rozenfeld

April 27, 2007 at 7:26 amOK, so last question:
Does keylight come with the PC version of AE 7.0 Professional version?

But it is a seperate install (The installer is on the AE7 Pro disk, but you have to run it seperately).

April 27, 2007 at 2:26 pmIf you aren;t using the professional version of After Efects, it may not be included (I mean AE Pro, not a student license. A student license of AE Pro comes with everything).
The difference is one parameter that was added, however, there may be more stuff under the hood. Older plugins have a way of not working properly in newer version of the program.
FYI – If you buy AE 7 now you will get a free upgrade to AE 8.
Either do that on Adobe’s site, or if you are a student, go to Journey Ed (where you can get a heavy discount):
