Hello everyone!
1) What is the best way to capture HD content from Sony EX1 into FCP. I have AJA KonaLH on my G5. Don’t have any problem with speed or memory.
2) Once I transfer the content is that better to convert them to ProRes 422 and then start editing?Any help will be very much appreciated.

The Kona card doesn’t come into play. You use the Sony XDCAM transfer application and import it native XDCAM. Then you can set your Render Control to ProRes for faster and cleaner renders.

thanks for your quick help.1) Where do I set the render control to ProRes? Is that within the sony transfer application or you are talking about the sequence setting inside FCP?
2) Also, I have to convert the footage from full HD to 720p for editing. Does the sony transfer software do it for me or is that better to transfer the content in full HD and then convert them using compressor to 720p ProRes. I like to have a full HD version (copy) of the native files for future use?

In the Sequence Setting> Video Processing.

If you go to work in 720p, why don’t you just shot 720p? Is the best quality option you can record in the camera.
What you can do with your KONA is to record Proress HQ (guess 10b Unc too) directly from the SDI of the EX-1.Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1

A couple of months ago Marco Solorio made few tests with the EX-1 codec. You can red it here:https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/142/857675
i think is logic. In a 720 picture you have less than the half of the pixels than in a 1080 and the same 35Mbps to accommodate it.

Why? 1080i XDCAM is a very light codec…meaning the data rate is very low. No need to convert.

ProRes has a higher data rate than XDCAM, and therefore will require more hard drive space. No…work Native XDCAM, then render ProRes when you are done. Others pointed out where that option was.
