P2 work flow issues
We have had our HVX200 for two months now and really like the camera, I am using Final cuts log and transfer but I am wishing for a little better work flow for some projects. For example, I went out to do a story and had a lot of cover shots (75 or so 10-sec clips), the interviews are easy to name, set in and out points, select audio etc….. But these cover shots are a pain.. Say I want to de-select audio for all the cover clips or name them, it’s a pain to select each clip and change the things I want to change.
I have just been importing all these clips into a folder named “cover shot” in my project. But then I have 75 individual clips all with goofy names and it’s hard to click through all of them to find the shot I am looking for.
Is there a way to take selected clips and change the things I want to change (the same for all of them) and import them to be one clip? I don’t care about setting in or out points, I find it easier/quicker to have one movie in my viewer with all of these similar clips that I can scrub and set my in and out points and drop them on my time line. This is more for news types of stories that will have a lot of cover shots.

Nope…sorry. You can only deal with each clip individually. This is one of the drawbacks to the P2 and other tapeless formats…you can’t have one huge file you list as FOREST B-ROLL to scroll through. You have lots of small files.

I’d try placing all the b-roll clips in a sequence, remove the audio, and then use that sequence as the source clip to select, mark in/out and edit into your program sequence.
Or, export that the b-roll sequence as a QT reference movie, then import that movie and make your selects from the one long movie.
Not the best workflow if you need to rebuild the project from scratch some day, but if these are one-time jobs then maybe it’s acceptable.

I personally would never do that. Reference movie export…that is even worse. What if ONE P2 file goes offline? That ref movie will cause lots of issues. Self Contained if you must do this, but note that you do indeed lose and and all reference to the original source…in case you have a drive failure.

Yup, I tend to avoid any workflow I can’t automagically rebuild a few months down the road, so for the vast majority of the jobs I do I wouldn’t consider it either… but for some people/projects the speed gains could outweigh the risk.
Your right about the QT Ref file, self-contained would be a much safer way to go (and disk space is cheap).

I guess the best option is to make a sequence of just cover shots, delete the unnecessary audio, export that as a new file and then import that into my project. Is there a possibility that Apple, Panasonic or third party developer could make software to combine clips??????

I suggested it to a Panasonic rep. They are all ears right now because they really want tape to go away. I suggested making it a pref on the camera…kind of like a record pause setting so the camera operator could determine when a clip is continued and when it starts a new clip.
Then, once your clips are in, another software update for Log and Capture that would allow you to string clips together as long as the timecode was continuous.

I like the software enhancement route best. It doesn’t seem it would be too hard for the software to allow selected clips (in log and transfer) with continuous timecode that when ingesting it makes one file. What do I know, I am not a software developer, but I bet it can be done. I may just call my Panasonic rep and see if he has contacts that could actually do something.
