  • How to make luminance control a value?

Posted by Peter O’connell on April 26, 2007 at 5:49 am

Hi does anyone know if there is a way (expression or otherwise) I can control a value with another layer’s luminance? Like the depth map layer in the lens blur effect. What I want to do is to be able to control any keyframable value in this way.
    Thanks

I don’t think this is possible unless you have the CS3 beta, and then I wouldn’t know how to tell you how to do it =) However, it’s my understanding that you can test pixel values with expressions in CS3.

May I ask why you’d want to change the layer that a Lens Blur is referencing for the Depth Map? You could just animate the change to the layer it’s already referencing….

Hi wuzelwazel. Thanks for the info that’s great if CS3 can do that. I don’t actually need it for the lensblur effect. I want to be able to plug a depthmap (or any black and white image) into any property of any effect like say turbulence, so that the intensity of the turbulence is governed by the black and white image.

[Peter O’Connell] “so that the intensity of the turbulence is governed by the black and white image.”

You can sort of fake this now with a luma track matte on an adjustment layer. However, it’s not actually changing the intensity of the turbulence on a per-pixel basis. It just adjusts the amount of the effect that’s applied an a per-pixel basis with a uniform ‘intensity.’ One of those subtly annoying differences in After Effects =)
