My mouse bit the dust. Is there a good editing mouse out there with a wheel that you like?

I tried a tablet for about 1 week….I really did. I tried to give it a chance but it just didn’t work for me. For Motion it is great…editing, not for me.
I use a simple MacAlly 3 button mouse with scroll wheel. Nothing fancy…works great.
Toss that Mighty Mouse out. Ugh…

I used a tablet (the old 6 x 8) on an AVID and AE long ago when we had two 4:3 CRTs sitting side by side. Somehow liked the action…no wrist issues.
I bought the wider 16:9 intuos and I cannot get the action right. It seems way too sensitive and i find myself hitting things that I didn’t mean to. I have it unplugged at the moment. I actually bought Painter Elements just for the tablet, along with Photoshop duties retouching etc. Again, used to love it, but can’t get this one to feel right. Might be that we now have a 24″ widescreen next to a 19″ 4:3. And with the wide aspect of the tablet it is a longer path from left to right and more work to manage it. the old 6 x 8 was a flick of the wrist from left edge to right edge.
I have scaled down the active area, but still….just doesn’t feel like the good old days.
I prefer the mighty mouse too, but I have a small hand and all the other fancy three button mice with their sculpted shape just don’t fit my hand.

I’d recommend the mighty mouse over all mice myself. It just rocks. And once I read Apples directions on how to keep the wheel clean, it’s even better. (Turn it upside down and roll it around on a clean sheet of paper- it works. I have no idea why) Before the mighty mouse I would use nothing but a MacAlly mouse. Everything else just feels odd. Tried the tablet too and that was IMHO a pain in the arm. Way too much movement for little benefit. But it looks cool with all that fancy gesturing. Reminds me of how clients always thought some Avid editors were so fast- becausep they had to make 5 or 6 keyboard commands to accomplish the same task most nles could accomplish with one mouse click and drag.

I was using a track ball when I started editing and loved it until it bit the dust. Since then I’ve been using Mighty Mouse and like the roller ball. Although after reading these posts I might try my Wacom Tablet from my graphic days.

I’d suggest not using the screen mapping function on the tablet and use the mouse function (with the pen). That way your tablet isn’t mapped to your screen and you don’t have that weird sensation of not knowing where you are or scrubbing clear across the tablet to get to your other screen. The tablet has saved my carpal tunnel demise to my career. No kidding.

Speaking of Tablets, I am a user and big fan of Wacom tablets, however does anyone else have problems selecting certain things with their tablet? For example, when I need to click (tap) on an effect in the Effects tab to delete it, it won’t select. When I tap it, it selects for a split second then deselects. Drives me crazy. And sometimes when you tap a clip to select it, it will move around on me.
Just seeing if I am crazy, or if others deal with these issues.

I have exactly the same behaviour you describe, with the wacom intuos 3 widescreen. There is also another bug when trying to move buttons around in DVD SP. You often cannot grab the button to move it, seems to be a hit and miss affair.
Having said that, i would not go back to mouse ever again! My editing is so much faster with a mouse, and with no wrist pains either.
For those who say they tried a tablet but hated it, i would risk a guess that you tried one of the cheaper tablets (even the cheaper wacoms are dreadful). I used to have a cheap one and it was just awful…when my wife got an Intuos i tried it for an hour and have not touched a mouse since.

I got one of the cheaper wacom tablets … bamboo fun medium … $100.
Perhaps I just don’t know any better not having used the Intuos range yet but I love this tablet.
The only problem I have is that my hand seems to have forgotten how to use the mighty mouse … seriously .. its like I’ve never used a computer before.Anywho, if the more expensive wacom tablets are even better than the one I have then I have something to look forward to 🙂
Also I have the same DVD SP button moving/clicking issues, the little mouse comes in useful here.
