720p to betasp…HELP
Posted by Mark Griesbauer on May 19, 2008 at 7:58 pmHi all, I have a 6 min. project with XDCAM EX footage shot in 720p. I need to get this mastered to a betasp. We are also using a aja iola to get to the beta deck. Do we NEED to buy the ioHD? or can this be done some other way in FCP? thnx inadvanced

May 19, 2008 at 8:11 pmsend it through compressor with an uncompressed 8-bit or prores hq as the video codec and uncompressed audio for the audio codec.
put the resize and frame rate setting for best quality and set it for 720×486 29.97fps.
You will also need to adjust the source
aspect settings so that it letterboxes.
Stations don’t usually take anamorphic tapes.compress that and you are all set.
I do this a lot.

May 19, 2008 at 8:12 pmYou need some sort of HD capture card. Can’t do it with the SD ones. Well, I hear that Decklink SD cards allow for this, but either way, you will need a new capture card.
Yes, the I/O HD can do this.

May 19, 2008 at 8:40 pmWhy does he need a capture card? Why can’t he drop his 720P sequence into an UC 8bit sequence, render it and send it to his Beta deck? He has an AJA IOLA.

May 19, 2008 at 8:42 pmIt’s an extra step, but it’s not a problem to just downconvert it to SD then use the IOLA to make the master.

Because…I…I…have no excuse for forgetting to mention what you mentioned.
WHich is why it is good to have LOTS of voices here to say “uh, try this!”

The image quality will not be as good for sure, unless he uses compressor to resize on the highest quality and or uses aja hardware to downconvert.
FCP is inadequate for down converting.

Ed”Not nearly as clean as hardware conversion. You’re adding fields where there were none and FCP does not always do the best job of this.

May 20, 2008 at 2:07 amI agree that FCP doesn’t compete with hardware, but I’ve added a bunch of 720P footage to SD programs by dropping it into the SD sequence and it looks as good or better than the SD footage. Chris’ suggestion to use Compressor is better though, short of buying hardware or hiring it out.
