I’ve been having this problem on and off for a while. I captured a bulk of stuff, and started editing. When i needed to capture again, i got a ‘Unable to read capture device – preview disabled’ message in my log and capture window. I’ve come to it 2 or 3 times since and it’s worked right off the bat, but 95% of the time it gives me that message. So i can’t be sure if it’s my camera or the firewire port on the mac, i’ve tried using multiple cables.

    Any ideas?

    Hector,

What kind of FireWire product is it. What bus are you using, FW800?

This is a fairly common error message, for me anyway.

Try refreshing A/V devices (under view menu).

Make sure your device control and capture setting are correct.

closing the window, then re-opening sometimes works too.

I’m capturing directly off my Sony PD100A via firewire. I don’t really know anymore details. Whatever is standard to that camera and the MacBook.

    Hector,
If you have iMovie try to see if its works. If you can capture with iMovie then you know your FW is OK.

    Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1
    G5 2x2Gh 4GbRAM-BlackMagic Extreme
    PMBP 17″Core2Duo 4GbRAM-AJA ioHD
    JVC DTV-17″
    SONY EX-1 . SONY PD170
..and always a big mess on top of the table.
