Western Digital Drive conflicts with Apple super drive
Posted by Michael Lynch on May 14, 2008 at 11:44 pmAs an FYI, I just installed a WD 2TB external drive (firewire 800). Seems to be working great and
seems to be fast enough to use as a capture drive.Well, after loading it my optical drive would not recognize discs anymore. The point of this message: in the Activity Monitor, I found a program called WDDSrvice (or something like that). Found it in /Library/LaunchDameons deleted, emptied trash and restarted. All is working fine now.
I just wanted to let others know about this bug if they’re experiencing the same problem.

May 15, 2008 at 3:38 amI’m not sure why an external drive would have put anything on your computer. Did you re-format it when you first got it?

This the first time I’ve ever heard of anything like this happening.

May 15, 2008 at 4:03 pmYes. It did have me put a disc in first, then fire up the drive (preformatted as windows). Everything looked good, reformatted drive to HFS with no problem. Worked on a project, went to burn in DVDSP and got an error message (volume in use). Was able to build to a file and burn using Toast…so did some searching and when I was about to give up found a post from someone with the same problem and that the only thing changed on his system was the addition of a WD 1TB drive…which got me to thinking…
I’ve got 3 WD USB drives (less than 1TB) that I regularly use for specific projects, and never had something like this happen. Maybe it has to do with the RAID ability, or the use of Firewire 800. But it’s real and it happened, so hopefully this post will benefit someone else should they encounter the same problem.
Thanks for the comments.

Bingo!!! That was your problem…
Never, ever load drivers from a drive manufacturer on your Mac. Not only is it uneccesary, but it can have nasty consequences as you found. The Apple Disk Utility will sense just about any drive and automaticlly ask if you want to initiallize any new ones, or any that are formated for other operating systems.

May 15, 2008 at 6:18 pmWestern Digital does not care about Mac users. They have a lot of products that they know wont’ work on Macs, and they don’t even care.

And you base that on what research? Just curious because you seem to know a lot about Western Digital’s marketing research about Mac connectivity.
See the funny thing is, we have Western Digitals installed in all our Mac desktops. They work flawlessly. The other funny thing is all of them that I purchased had the Mac compatibility logo on them.
Western Digital just contacted me yesterday to test out their new My Book 2 that offers great speed for DV and compressed HD editing. We’re gonna try it out.
So can you please point me to your research that shows where Western Digital said they don’t care about the Mac market. I’m sure it makes for good reading.

May 15, 2008 at 8:18 pmThat’s because those are models which are licensed to Apple. Hence the logo. Of course those will work. I have those too.
I’m talking about their off-the-shelf products. Here’s one example:

This is also interesting:
https://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?DriveID=459That’s enough for me. I don’t like them. That’s my opinion and I’m entitled to it. Just like you express yours quite often. Sorry for the hyperbole, I know it was a bit much. I just don’t like them at all and have good reasons for it. Their support is pretty unhelpful as well.

May 15, 2008 at 8:32 pmThat knowledge base contains dozens of errors and problems related to Windows as well.
So is this proof that Western Digital doesn’t care about Windows users either?
For that matter, there are hundreds of articles on Apple.com documenting errors and problems. Does this mean Apple doesn’t care about Mac users?
Or does it simply show that no technology company can be 100% perfect at everything, and that documenting errors and providing work-arounds is sometimes all they can do?
I really don’t care if you like Western Digital or not, but I find your reasoning to be very strange.

You beat me to a response Jeff. I think your post pretty much sums up my thoughts as well.

May 16, 2008 at 4:36 amI don’t like the company and it’s my opinion they, like many, many PC component makers, do not care much about Mac users because they only make up 7% of the market – and among that 7%, only a small fraction of them are going to purchase 3rd party hardware upgrades.
Obviously I don’t have “proof.” You can’t prove an unquantifiable concept such as how much a giant corporation cares about something. It’s simply my opinion, and I apologized for my hyperbolic expression of it. I just think Seagate is a better company.
