    hi folks!

after using fcp for a few hours it slows down dramatically! going through the timeline frame by frame becomes a pain because it goes very slow (about 1 sec from one to the other when pressing left/right arrow or holding down ‘k’ + ‘l’ / ‘k’ + ‘j’). other simple commands slow down obvious as well! crashes happening definite more often.

    terrible pain, big pain!

that trouble stops when i chose my user preset again. but after a while the slowing down starts again.

updating the decklink did not help at all! the projects i work on aren’t even that big!

so here are all the specifications of my mac, maybe one of you pros knows, what’s wrong or is familiar with that:

    Mac OSX 10.4.10
    Dual 2 GHz
    PowerPC G5
    4.5 GB DDR SDRAM

    FCP 5.1.4

    Blackmagic Decklink 6.6.7

    ATI Radeon 9600 XT

    any help would be great!
    thanx

What kind of sequence and which drives? When things slow down, what happens when you reboot?

    Hi!

sequnce: DV PAL (the edited clips have Blackmagic DV PAL Codec)

drives: different ones – RAIDs with Fire wire 800. Right now I work on a RAID 1 level drive with seagate disks, good, stabile stuff. Though it doesn’t make a difference.

I guess the Mac is too old now or needs to be done all over (new system installation).

    What do you think.

    Thank you!

Before a clean reinstall, try repairing the disk by booting from the OS X disk and running Disk Utility. Or Disk Warrior if you have it (and you should).

    Kevin,
thank you very much for your quick help! Your last reply was very straight, so excuse my ignorance but I need to be answered some questions to get it clear just for myself:

Why rebooting from the Mac OSX disk? And how do I do that (I haven’t even heard about such stuff)?

Disk Utility fine. But what do you mean with ‘should have’ the Disk Warrior? You think the disk needs to be worked and repaired all over?

    Thanks again

when it slows down try turning your video output off and see if things go back to normal. This may be a blackmagic thing.

I have written about this earlier. Macs with decklink installed will get slower after a while. This is especially noticable on G5s (quads are the worst). Removing the decklink and installing aja fixes this. Reinstalling the system will NOT fix this.

Search my name to find my original posting on this.

    Andres,

big thanks, though it’s no good news to me, also big thanks to Kevin and Rob for your help!

I made a software update on the Decklink, that worked for a while but not for long, as I mentioned. Also I cleaned up the Render Vault wich helped a bit but wasn’t perfect.

The thing is: Our entire company is equiped with blackmagic. Do you see a problem in using aja on one or two computers and filpping projects over to others?

We bought a couple of ajas to fix the problems with the slowdowns. No problems in mixing decklinks and ajas. If you upgrade your mac, the problem will more or less go away (new intelmac), so it might not be very smart to use money on a aja card… depends on your setup.

Okay, that sounds solutionwise quiet profound.

Thanks for your support! Though I can’t make any changes on the Mac right now I think what to go for …
