  Codec Differences

  Hey everyone…had posted this a few days ago, but never heard anything, wondered if it got lost in the shuffle, so figured I’d try one more time…nobody anywhere seems to be able to give me an answer!

  I just recently purchased a Sony HR12, and am very excited to start editing some of my AVCHD footage. I just have a quick question about the main differences between transcoding the files into ProRes 422 versus Apple Intermediate Codec.

  Is the quality better on one over the other? Does one take up less space? I currently have Final Cut Express 4, which if I’m correct, can only transcode to AIC, so I’m debating if it’s necessary to get Final Cut Studio 2 in order to use ProRes 422 instead, for the best possible quality.

  I don’t know the answer, I don’t think anyone on this board has used Final Cut Express… Does it still exist?

  I have the feeling ProRes will smash Intermediate codec into the ground. Intermediate codec seemed like a 12 month stopgap while Apple invented better methods of HD ingest

  Hi Mike,
  As AAron says the AIC was a kind of temporary solution. I don’t think many people use it by now. At least I don’t see people asking questions about the AIC in the COW.
  I think you should go to Proress.
