  Adding a drawn animation to moving video footage!!!!

  Hi, I can’t find how to do this anywhere! + It really would be useful to improve my animations, so if anyone could help I’d be very grateful.

  I’m doing a project using street video footage from a camcorder + then adding 2d drawn animations on top. Now, I’m fine as long as the camcorder is still on a tripod, so the drawings can be simply placed in the scene as I have drawn them. But I have no idea how to make the animations look convincing when the camcorder footage is moving.

  I’d like to know if there is a technique (like Track Motion etc.) where I could keep the drawn characters stand still in the street, for example, as the camera moves past them! At the moment the drawings move stupidly through the air fixed with the camera as it moves! How can I ground them?

  Tracking Tuts

  Here’s all the Tracking Tuts I know of, the first four are from adobe support. And for a step by step on adjusting a track that goes bad (Tracks gone bad! the movie) see the 3rd part of Aharon’s series on turning video into cartoons, there he tracks an eye onto the character, starts at the 5 minute mark. It’s only a 1 point track but he shows you how to adjust frame by frame when the tracker gets cranky. Hope these help.

  Use the Motion Tracker, only included with AE Pro, under Windows > Motion Tracker. If you don’t have experience working with the Motion Tracker this is going to be a difficult undertaking for you.

  One problem you’ll face is keeping the tracked points on screen. I recommend you understand all of the features of the Motion Tracker before you get too involved (Search Region, Feature Region, Attach Point). An important thing is to move the Feature Region and Search Region to new ‘features’ as the features you were tracking move off screen (use opt-drag on the feature region to do this). The feature and search regions will move but your attach point will remain in the same spot, continuing to properly (hopefully) track the motion.

  Also, you’re probably already aware of this, but shadows and lighting are just as important in selling the final composite =)
