    I’ve got well-lit and well-shot green screen footage in DVCproHD 720p24 format. What would be my best bang-for-buck chroma key workflow? I’m not having great luck with the standard FCP6 filters. I used to do really well with Mattinee, but it’s no longer an option for me.

    Did you try Keylight in Motion? I own AvantEdge and love it.

    Keylight (as far as I can tell) does not work on an intel-mac.

    The FCP chroma key filter doesn’t return good results (to put it kindly). Shake is a great option if you’re familiar with it.

    Just for another perspective… I’ve been using DVmattepro from dv garage to key and Motion to composite. The filter is great but is specifically geared toward 4:1:1 or 4:2:0 footage that gives other keyers trouble.

    No matter what you use, just remember that you don’t have to try a get a perfect key with one instance of a filter. You can key different areas for best results and combine them. If the shot is supposed to look photo-realistic, try adding some monochromatic noise to the finished composite to tie the whole thing together.

    If you have After Effects CS3, I’d use Keylight. Sometimes my workflow is Motion with final composites in FCP so I have been using Boris Continuum Complete (FxPlug Version for FCP6). Keylight shipped with CS3. Boris is available for purchase as an FxPlug and works in both Motion and FCP6.

    Another vote for BCCfxplug. It does a pretty decent job, but I have it already and if I had to buy again:

    I am finding I like to stay in FCP if I can help it. Sometime I need to take it outside of FCP, but if it’s shot well and not too difficult, staying in FCP makes the edit much more fluid, especially for changes.

    Boris Continuum Complete has an awesome keyer.

    But apply the FCP 4:2:2 Chroma smoother to the shot before you apply that filter.

    Thanks for all the advice! I’m working with another editor (in another location) so we’ll need to agree on whatever filter’s we’re going with. Given the ridiculous amount of expected revision phases, I really don’t want to leave FCP if I don’t have to.
