Final Cut Pro and Dat deck
Posted by Danielle Wang on May 1, 2008 at 11:19 pmHi,
I have to load some sound files from a dat tape to my project in FCP. I’m new to FCP, but know Avid pretty well. Can someone tell me what kind of dat deck is compatible with FCP? Do I need to purchase any special cables? Thanks!

May 2, 2008 at 4:36 pmI’m not sure. I’m pretty sure we have the Aja Kona3. Does it go through an AES/EBU input?

May 2, 2008 at 4:41 pmDepending on your DAT machine, you can capture with device control to FCP. The Kona3 has digital inputs yes, so again, depending on your DAT machine you might be able to capture straight out of it OR you will need an audio a/d converter or SPIDF to AES converter. Do you have a DAT machine now or are you going to rent? if you have one, what do you have?

May 2, 2008 at 4:46 pmWe will be renting one, so I just want to make sure we rent the right one. So I could just rent a TASCAM DA-30 which is what I have always used for AVID. It should come with the necessary cables, right?

I own a Tascam DA-30 along with a Kona 3 and K3Box. I plug the AES/EBU out of the DAT into the AES/EBU in on the K3Box. You can do the same with the patch cable if you don’t have the K3Box. Works fine in FCP. No device control so you have to start playback and use ‘capture now.’
