How To Reverse Fields in FCP
Hi,
I have a problem with incorrect field order on a set of H264 files produced for me. When I preview in FCP the moving objects have the venetian blind effect, interlaced I am told.
I took the files to a post production house and they ran a sample on the 5min clip and reversed the fields in FCP then output the file in mpeg2 using compressor….the result looked good and fixed the problem.
My question is how do I reverse the fields? The reason I didn’t get them to do the 4x 15min clips is the cost for 5min was huge. I have FCP 6.03 and would love to fix this myself. I have been through every option I can find and am very familiar with the navigation now, so I don’t think it would be a major task.
Any help would be brilliant.

P.S. I did try de-interlacing and many of the options in video effects etc, didn’t make much difference.

Just import your file to FC. If in the Browser shows as Upper-first, check it as Lower-first (or if shows as Lower, check Upper). Like that you are inverting the field order on play.

Shift Fields usually works, but you’ve got an H.264 file which is a web / BluRay finishing file, not an editing format. So that filter may not work all that well.

Yes I did try selecting lower field first but no difference after rendering, still get the field separation effect.

It sounds like the movie you received *was* interlaced, and may have been scaled without being first deinterlaced, before you received it.

I’m not sure but I know the guy at the post production studio took the 5min sample and re-rendered saying he was simply reversing the fields and that did fix it, i just cannot seem to replicate it.
I have tried to select lower field first, being upper first now, also tried shift fields and de-interlace but no change, unless i am not rendering properly.

You can not just to change the field order of the original file. You need to export a new file with the proper field order.Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1

I understand what you mean, when I watched the producer do it he rendered within FCP and it then played fine, I’m pretty sure he didn’t export it first, but I don’t care how i do it as long as it works.
Are you suggesting exporting with compressor and selecting lower field first?

Do the movie looks too horrible when you play it?
First you should make sure that the file really has field -order problems. That you see combs in FC can be normal if you are monitoring in your Mac screen instead of in an interlaced monitor. If you have AE or Shake you can check this very easily.
When you say that your movie have the reverse field order I think about two different things:
– The movie have been rendered with the wrong field order. The movie is almost impossible to look at. When you play the movie you can see a kind of forward-backward movement in each frame. In this case there is nothing to do. No way to repair it.
– The movie has been exported with the NO DEFAULT field order. I have exported some times DV as Upper first. This is not a problem as long as you keep this order when the movie is played. Whenever FG get a DV clip it supposes that is always Lower first. You just have to tell FC that is Upper (in the Browser) and no problem at all.
I wish I could have a look to the movie, but I can’t. I propose you a simple test:
– Open your movie in QT.
– Select a clip of 1 minute (from a part of the movie with a lot of movement).
– Copy and paste in a new window.
– Save As self-contained.
– Import it directly to DVDSTP and make a DVD.

The video looks good apart from the comb effect, when i say it needs reverse fields I am only going from what the producer said. I am currently going through the dvd training but have not found the answer yet, I will try to export using comperssor and select the opposite field order.
Also the video image in the viewer window is red, and I have tried a few clips but they are all the same, when you play the video it is ok but soon as it pauses it goes red again. Have I clicked an option by accident?
