I’ll start with an example: I have a 60 second montage with 60 cuts. I’d like to put a short dissolve between each cut and have every dissolve be the same length. Is there a way of selecting all the clips and applying transition that covers every cut in one step? The copy and paste method is too time consuming so I’m looking for an alternative similar to what is available in Media100.

Thanks in advance for any help,

    Mark

Look up “Edit with transition” in the user manual. You can drag several selected clips from the bin into the canvas and choose the “edit with transition” overlay and all of the selected clips will be put into the timeline with the current default transition applied between cut points.

The trick is getting the order of the clips to be correct. This might involve renaming clips in sequential order (how you want them to appear in the timeline) or possibly arranging their icons in that order in the bin.

It might be easier to drop each clip onto the canvas overlay one at a time to ensure the proper clip order.

Did you try using the Edit Selection Tool?

I trick that I think I remember (FCP is not running right now) if all of your clips are in a single layer on the timeline is to simply mark in at the beginning of your sequence, select all of the clips (CMD-A) and drag them to the canvas window and drop them on the “Overwrite with Transition” area. It will build a new sequence and add your default transition between every clip on your timeline. Just set you default transition and gove it a go.

Thanks Tom. That did the trick.

Thanks for your suggestion Russ. Using the selection tool and then dragging the clips to “overwrite with transition” in the canvas works. I also found that cmd-A, or dragging the cursor over the clips with the regular selection tool to select them all also works. In all cases I did not have to give an in point.
