Orange vests bleeding/blooming when displayed on tv?
I am editing some racing footage and their are men throughout the track with bright ‘hi vis’ orange vests. When I put the footage to dvd and watch it their vests beam/glow. Has anyone had any expeience with this? And can you offer me any advice?

I would put a 3 way color corrector on the clips and use it to isolate those colors. It will take a little playing with to get it right. Then desaturate the oranges so they aren’t as bright.
Apple’s Color would do nicely also. But the key is to bring down the orange colors so they don’t blast out so much.

Your orange / reds are probably way off the charts and out of safe zone. Do as Russel suggests and bring down those colors using the 3Way. Even better control is offered in Color.

I used the broadcast safe but It didn’t seem to do much, should I select extremely conservative? Thank you very much for helping me guys!

I would use the color corrector like I mentioned before. Just because it’s broadcast safe, doesn’t mean that it looks right.
It’s possible that even that won’t help too much if the colors were clipped by the camera.
See what you can do though.
(look at the FCP manual if you need some help on limiting the color range to just the color you want to change)

I’m going to give it a go. What do you think about the desaturating filter. I suppose the downside is the rest of the video will be effected. Thanks Russ, Wish me Luck!

I have had a good look at this feature and am going through the manuel but I do not see how I can isolate a color. I can change the whites, blacks and mids but cannot figure out how to effect just the orange that I am trying to effect without interfering with the rest of the video. Thank you very much, this is a great site.

Use the 3-way, and read up on how to isolate a color. Use the limit tab – it’s on the bottom of the 3-way in visual mode, but you need to click a little button (bottom left AFAIK) to let you see it. There you’ll see 3 limiters – it’s the top one you need, with the color spectrum. Click the radio button next to it to activate. Now you see the two lines in the middle? Start playing with those – slide the colour spectrum to get orange in the middle (the bright part) and use the handles on the lines to isolate the colour range accurately. Then any correction you do on the 3-way wheels will be limited to this colour range. But RTFM for more detail – that’s only of the top of my head…
