I’ve had a look around, but I can’t seem to find a totally satisfactory answer.

I want to build some custom transitions, typically they consist of a basic dissolve and then some distortion effect or similar keyframed across the transition.

    I found this tutorial https://www.lafcpug.org/basic_custom_transition.html
Which details more or less what I’m trying to achieve, but is a little cumbersome (essentially requiring both clips to be keyframed separately).

In Avid (it’s still how I think) I can apply an effect to a section of ‘filler’ (like an adjustment layer in AE I guess) and work with it from there (I actually detailed this process once in a mini tutorial thing once: https://www.dylanreeve.com/videotv/avid/2005/waynes-world-transition.html).

I can’t find a similar way to build a transition in FCP. Is there one, or do I need to use the process described in the (old) LAFCPUG page? One pleasant side effect of the Avid way is that the effect can be copying or saved to a bin very easily and reapplied quickly and consistently.
