serious interlacing problems
Posted by Aaron Leigh-richard on April 21, 2008 at 5:58 pmI have a serious interlacing problem, where i can see about 6 distinct breaks in the picture whenever there is a quick camera movement or pan.
This happens every time FCP auto-renders, and also, when I use another program (media100), it happens as soon as i squeeze it with sorenson.
I am attaching a link to an example of the problem, between the regular picture and a flash frame.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated:)

Can you expand a little on your workflow for this project? Video format, codec, render settings, version of FCP, hardware etc..
It may help with any diagnosis.
Thanks,

April 23, 2008 at 3:47 amThe video format is miniDV. In final cut I am capturing with 48 khz anamorphic (it was shot 16×9. I am using version 6.0.1, I’m working off macbook pro. I believe I captured at 720×486 CCIR 601.
What’s interesting is that i use all the normal settings in Media100 as well and I get the same results.
The only other thing I can think of is that I am capturing with a miniDV cam and something is corrupted in the transfer. I am having issues sharing ports, so I have to capture straight to the internal and then plug in the external hard drives to transfer.
I hope that helps!
-Thanks

April 23, 2008 at 9:43 amIs this problem visible on the footage before you capture it? Have you previewed the footage directly from the tape using an external monitor and camera/tape deck? Are you seeing the bars there too?
What kind of port sharing issues are you facing? You’re external HD is firewire 400 right? (The port your deck uses?) There should be no problem capturing DV to the internal HD and then transferring it off to your FW HD, although this workflow isn’t recommended. (I would suggest picking up a FW800 drive, as this will not only free up your 400 port, but will give you higher transfer speeds overall. The prices are similar too.) I can’t imagine that port sharing and this transfer method is causing your problem though. My bet, at the moment, is that the issue will also be apparent on the tape before capturing.

April 23, 2008 at 3:41 pmWell, it’s been happening with several different projects i’ve been importing to, (so it’s not one specific tape) including pure animations i’m creating in AFX.
I am using FW 400 because i only have a 4 to 6 pin cable, running from the deck. I do have to remove my drives (which are connected 800) because my laptop has serious trouble recognizing a device when everything else is running. It’s tedious, but my internal seems to be handling it so far.
I tried compressor last night and the problem seemed to disappear. (I outputted as an mpg4) I’m concerned my copy of sorenson is corrupted.

April 24, 2008 at 10:44 amHave you tried reinstalling Sorenson? IMO, Compressor is a more stable app in general, and the output quality is great. I have never really found a need to use anything else. And if the problem isn’t apparent with Compressor, stick with it!
I’d also be a little concerned that your MBP is having trouble running both a 400 device and 800 at the same time.
I work that way frequently, without ever having a single problem. How is your FW800 drive formatted? Mac OS or something else? It can take longer for the OS to recognise a DOS formatted drive, in my experience, up to a minute, where as a OS formatted drive is almost instant.
I would also suggest repairing your OS permissions, using something like Disk Warrior or Tech Tools. If there’s a gremlin in the machine, this may help get rid of it.
