    Hello all, I need some help with a project I’m working on. I’m working on 6 :30 commercials that were shot with the RED One camera. I brought the footage in as 1080 Pro Res 422. The project is finished, and now it is time to send to stations for broadcast. I figured the best way to make sure everyone is happy is to give each 96 stations a data DVD with two files for each spot. One file will be a full quality Pro Res 422 1080 file, and the other will be a regular DV/NTSC 720×480 quicktime file. I don’t have a Beta deck, so I feel this is the best way to do this.

    My problem is trying to figure out how to export the timeline to a DV/NTSC 720×480 quicktime movie without it being squashed, preferably just fitting into a 720×480 movie with letter bars. I realize I could just export the full res files, bring them back into FCP, slap them on a DV/NTSC timeline, and then export them again. The problem is that I’m dealing with 6 commercials for each 96 locations across the country. I’ll save you the math, that’s 576 spots!!! I really don’t feel like doing that for all files. I need a way that I can batch export all my sequences out of compressor at be able to make each sequence export both of these formats, without squashing the DV/NTSC file.     First, I don’t think you are safe in your assumption. You should be asking what formats stations can and will accept. DV is a less than desirable format if you spot has graphics in it.

    But I have found the only do way to do from HD (1080i to SD) is exporting through compressor because there is a field order shift when going from HD to SD.

    This is going to be time consuming any way you go.

    So you’re saying that I should go through and check with all 96 stations to see how they would like the spots? That seems like a pointless process that will cause way too many headaches.

    Well 1st thing a ProRes file can only be used on a FCP 6 workstation, nothing else. Not even FCP 5, so unless they are FCP and up-to-date that file is useless. Then DV is not really a broadcast standard, some stations will accept it but it is on the lowend of the SD scale. If I shot something with a RED camera and I found out it was delivered as a DV file for broadcast I would be PISSED! But hey that’s just me.

    If you were sending out DBetas or even BetaSP tapes I wouldn’t recommend calling but anything like files I would, but then again that is me. I would rather waste a couple minutes on the phone than risk sending files that are not usable or incur some kind of extra processing charge for me or my client.

    Uncompressed 10 Bit and for the HD you would have to go to Uncompressed 8 bit to fit on a DVD-R. I love the DVCProHD codec but once again not every editing system can use it (but a lot more than ProRes)

    If all you’re missing is a beta deck, and you don’t feel like calling 96 stations, why not rent a beta deck and knock them out.

    This would probably take just as much time (if not more) as calling the stations and burning 96 individual DVD’s.
