  • Outputing ProRes422(HQ) Sequence to Tape

Posted by Lisa Rolley on April 10, 2008 at 8:29 pm

    Hello everyone,

I am new to the Pro Ress 422 workflow – it looks great i must say, i will be working on a project with maya and AE artists and my edit will be in HD & SD ProRes 422

I am curious as to what my output options are for laying off to tape whether it be HD and/or SD what do i need to know and be aware of.

Any help and advice would be great – i am watching the lynda.com tutorial that just came out on HD but i thought i would pick some of your seasoned brains beforehand : )

ProRes is just a codec. Works exactly the same as editing in DV, or Uncompressed, DVCPRO-HD, etc….

You options for laying off to tape are exactly the same as with any other format. Are you using a Kona or Blackmagic based system?

Your options are nearly limitless. All you need is a capture card to output that signal, and then you can choose a deck of your choice. DVCAM, DVCPRO (although those are low and and all ProRes benefit goes out the window), DVCPRO 50, Beta, Digibeta for standard def…DVCPRO HD, D5, HDCAM, HDCAM SR for HD.

It all depends on what your client wants in the end.

Hey guys thanks so much for responding you rock!!!

ok so sorry for the lack of details – we just got a Blackjmagic HD extreme card and its setup , so exciting and we are running this on a 8 core macpro with the latest version of FCP – so I really would love to know what my options are with pro res – we have a sony dvwa500 digi beta deck for SD layoffs and we rent HD decks when needed – so i guess i am curious as to exactly how i would layoff sd & HD pro res projects to tape whether it be digi beta or hd cam etc…

also whats the difference between 422 and 422 HQ – i mean the REAL difference : )

Via SD- or HD-SDI and rs422 out of your blackmagic card, then perform an edit to tape.

    Is that what you mean?

A capture card will pretty much output any codec and frame rate that is natively supported by Final Cut Pro. There are exceptions of course, but for the most part, anything you can do that is natively supported by FCP rt engine can be output to tape.

Ok so just to clarify can you guys explain to me exactly how i would output to Digi Beta & HD CAM?

The project is ProRes 422 (HQ) but i believe we will be delivering both an SD and HD version – right now i am cutting at 1920×1080 but there will be a back and forth with maya and AE artists – eventually once picture is locked i will layoff both SD & HD tapes

any help would be greatly appreciated

    thank you

[lisa rolley] “Ok so just to clarify can you guys explain to me exactly how i would output to Digi Beta & HD CAM?”

You need to check your Blackmagic settings. There should be an option to set your output to Downconvert HD to SD. That’s how you lay off to DigiBeta.

For HD, you leave it set to 1080i HD.

That’s how it works on the Kona. You leave FCP set to the native HD, but you go into the Kona Control Panel and set that up to perform the downconversion in realtime as you lay to tape.

    Lisa,

I have the same setup as you and it’s really as simple as Walter described. File:Edit to Tape!
The codec, whether it be Uncompressed 8bit, 10bit or ProRes 422 is of no consequence to the BlackMagic card (with few exceptions). It does the math to translate from FCP to the deck. From your point of view it will be like any other layoff – no differences whatsoever.

As Walter mentioned, you can tell the BlackMagic card (in the system prefs) to down-convert on the fly to SD for that layoff. Both of my machines let you down-convert to letterbox or anamorphic ONLY. I can’t find a way to get the BlackMagic card to do a center cut 4×3 down-convert on the fly. For this I create a 4×3 sequence and nest the HD sequence and do a little zoomification to scale it 4×3. Be sure to watch your safe title! Final Cut doesn’t have a 4×3 safe title when editing in a 16×9 sequence (don’t they know that much of what we do in HD is center extracted for SD broadcast and the titles need to be 4×3 safe?…oh well, maybe in V7!)
