  • Capturing 1080P/29.97 Issue

Posted by Jason Joly on April 8, 2008 at 1:39 am

I am hoping someone can help me out with a problem I encountered today.

i was trying to capture footage that was on HDCAM in FCP using my blackmagic decklink card. It was shot 1080P/29.97. My problem is that I could not find a setting to capture with those parameters. I even tried to create a new setting in the AV settings menu, but could not find an input that would give me all of those options.

I am really new to HD editing and this is the first time I have had to do anything with progressive frames, so I’m really thankful for any help I get here on this forum.

    Thanks for your time.

Just choose the 1080i 29.97 setting. If your footage is progressive, then it will capture progressive.

What Shane says, just make sure to turn the field rendering of your sequence to ‘none’ by hitting apple-zero.

Shane and Jeremy:Would the first clip dropped into an empty sequence automatically set the properties of the sequence?

(Having an argument with a buddy, neither of us shoot HD or HDV, but I have been doing 1080i out of After Effects for several small projects.)

No as FCP will think and for all intents and purposes treat your footage as interlaced. So if you want Progressive capture, edit and rendering, (and this is a new ‘feature’ of FCP6) you capture as you would normal 1080i, but then you change your clips and timelime AFTER capture to a field dom of ‘none’. At this time, FCP does not let you determine field order prior to capture so it has to be done after the electron dance.

Which reminds me of the neutron dance:

Please help, time crunch! I’m in a similar situation as the original poster. Footage was shot 1080p/29.97. Trying to capture from a rented Sony J-H3 HDCAM deck. Unlike the original poster I keep getting an error in FCP within a minute of starting to capture a clip. It’s in reference to “tape trouble” and kills my capture. The deck keeps rolling however. Is this a problem with the way I have FCP setup or is it a deck setup issue? Desperate…thanks!!

I’m running FCS2 on 10.4.1, QT v7.2 (haven’t updated in a few months). I’m using a Kona LHe. Easy setup using: AJA KONA LH – 1080i 29.97 10 bit Uncompressed. Plenty of room on my RAID. HELP!!
