Hey guys. I’m planning on running a small production company and was wondering what the best setup for me if I plan to have two editors working on the same project in FCP. We will both have Mac Pros and will be running final cut studio 2. Final cut server? Raiding a few hard drives? any advice?

    At the same time?

You’ll have to wait to see what FCServer can do when it’s released, hopefully next week.

But even a SAN like XSAN doesn’t allow two users to use the same project at the same time. EditShare is probably the closest thing, but something tells me that you’re not ready to dump tens of thousands of dollars into a solution.

Easiest thing is to duplicate the media used to both computers and only work on separate sections in different project files. Then combine the sections back into one project file by copy and pasting or exporting XML files of the sequences or other bins. With just a little communication you can accomplish quite a bit.

Russ is right. Right now I am on an XSAN with 4 MacPros running FCS2, media all on an XSERVE Raid. You need SAN software like XSAN, SANmp, SANBox or similar in order to do this. Final Cut Server is designed for another purpose altogether.

And as Russ said, EDITShare is a good thing to look into. Or heck, if it is two machines only, have the storage connected to one and then share that storage over GIGe Ethernet and you should be good to go.

But if you come from an Avid background, you are going to have to shake off what you know from that, because FCP is different when it comes to editing in a shared environment. Projects are not sharable…no two people can open the same one at the same time. But you can have multiple projects, one for each segment or act and then you can have one for the final assembly. Back up to the shared storage, but always edit withthe project stored locally on your mac.

i should probably clarify that when i say two people working on one project at the same time i planned on basically having one person doing the cutting while the other begins to figure out the color correcting for an example. so i guess what im really looking for is what kind of hardware setup i should use–raid vs lan etc.

    Trip,

What you really mean is two people working on the same SEQUENCE at the same time.

You can easily copy projects and have multiple people working on things simultaneously. But ultimately, you can only have ONE person on a sequence at the same time. (True with Avid as well). FCP approaches project/media/sequence management much differently than Avid. This difference will impact your choices for SAN, connectivity, and workflow. I’d suggest that you contact a VAR that’s done shared FCP installs and have them outline what you need. Once you start getting into a networked environment, it’s no longer just plug and play. It’s also no longer CHEAP!

    Good luck.
