I am in the beginning stages of setting up a home editing studio and am trying to put together a list of hardware / software purchases I need to make.
I am currently operating on the newly released MacBook Pro and am soon purchasing Final Cut Studio 2. (I am currently using 4.5)
I intend to begin producing short films 5-20 mins, and am producing a pilot for a cooking show in May. I hope to shoot and edit HD.
With a two-three thousand dollar budget in mind, does anyone have advice as to where that money would be best spent? Monitors? Speakers? Hard-drives? etc. anything I haven’t considered?

thank you so much for your time.

Monitor: TV Logic is the one I recommend and the 17″ model is about $3,000.

You can also look at the Panasonic Pro Plasma series, about $1,000 for a 42″ display. Calibrating that will be tougher because you won’t have a proper HD broadcast display, but you can do it.

AJA Io HD is a great box for monitoring HD and for getting any format of video in and out of your laptop. $2999 at BH Photo.

Hard drives: eSATA array is what you really want and those run anywhere from $1,000 on up depending on the size and manufacturer. You’ll need an eSATA card for your laptop. You want to get double the amount of storage space you think you will need to allow for render space and ensure the drives don’t choke by becoming too full.

Speakers: KRK Rokit 5 are the best cheap audio monitors I’ve found. Good flat response.
