  • mixing 24p with other frame rates jerky/stutter question

I had a large project that mixed several different types of video, shot from several different videographers, plus stock footage of all flavors. All footage ranged from HD 1080 – DV.
Project needed to be delivered on DV.
Project consisted of 9 videos, each with multiple international (translated) versions.

Things went ok through the online approval process, and footage looked good on both my computer screen and my external Panny BT-1700 thru my AJA HD. Then we sent them to a company that was going to master and duplicate the dvds.

The approval checkdisc came back with a few shots jerking, shaking and stuttering.
After some research here on the cow, I figured the footage was originally shot in 24p, and I hadn’t removed pulldown or done any frame rate converting.

So that’s the basic set up to my question…..

Why did I not see any of this jerking until the end?

From this point it went to their staff editor, who experience MANY more problems, trying to “fix” the stutter. More footage started to jerk (not on system, but on his export), including stock footage. He ran into renders that showed they were rendered, but when played they displayed the unrendered gfx. They wouldn’t render until he moved them then moved them back.

The render problem was probably due to a drive that was nearly full.

    Any thoughts?

I’ve never run into this kind of trouble AFTER approval. I use 24 p quite a bit, but usually its an all or nothing situation.
