FCP and HVX P2 card
Posted by Justin Kauer on March 17, 2008 at 7:59 pmDoes anyone have any beefs or comments on the compatibility with the HVX and FCP? The company I work for is looking to purchase a camera and I’ve heard some good things however I’ve never used one. Thanks for any help.

I have worked with FCP and this camera since the day it came out with great success. I have a tutorial on how to work with P2 and FCP as well…

March 18, 2008 at 12:19 amGreat, thanks Shane! I will use this as a tool to help convince the authority figures above..
But all training and goodness aside, have you had any unforeseen problems? I would like to be ready for any scrutiny. Thanks again for the help.

March 18, 2008 at 12:25 amYou have to be VERY careful with this tapeless workflow. VERIFY that you copied everything before you erase the card. Double check, triple check. Maybe even back up to TWO drives, just in case. Have a system in place where you know what cards are empty and what are full. KEEP YOUR MASTER ARCHIVES…they are your master tapes.
Look into Raylight as a good importing alternative. http://www.DVFILM.com
Here’s an article I wrote about the workflow we developed…

Not a one, I have had the camera since December, read everything I could. Done our first gig with it.. It out performs all my expectations. And edits are just like any other.. only 1080i

Check out the HVX-HPX forum and Dvxusers.com…. the system is sweet -

March 18, 2008 at 11:01 amThree years professional use with P2 on different Panasonic cameras. Not one single file lost, nor any problems with copying files or corrupt files. The system works perfect.
The main topic is to perform a perfect workflow. If people run this system with professional care it works perfect.Rainer Wirth

March 18, 2008 at 7:28 pmI have been using it for almost 2 years with no problems. Not only that, but I prefer the workflow. Once you go P2, capturing from tape will seem so 20th century.
Also, Just came back from Kuwait where we shot with 3 HVX-200s with P2 cards and edited on MacBook Pros under horrible deadlines – not a single problem, not a single lost clip and made all our deadlines!
I would take Shane’s advice on backup – the files MUST be in 2 places before editing. If the drive crashes or you accidently delete a P2 clip, it’s gone for good.
